Reading on the BBC website it seems likely that E Scooters will be legalised within days. I was looking at this as a nice light, compact alternative to an Electric Bike to carry in the garage. It seems that this permission will be limited to rental scooters only in city centres - shame really

Not sure how practical they would be in anything but a perfectly smooth surface.

We walked around the centre of Oslo last year and whilst the scooters looked great fun and I'm sure we're really useful for the people using them my God did they make life dangerous for pedestrians! Zipping about everywhere on the pavements and pedestrianised areas as well as the roads you took your life in your own hands in places. They are just too fast!

How obvious is it that a scooter is rented? 😳👍🏻
edit: oh! It’ll be the ones rented out like Boris bikes, right? From stands.

Where we are in France a Voie Verte is within half a kilometre. There is then 130klms of track to use.

Our two nearest villages are 5k and 8k away in opposite directions.

I cycle the Voie Verte almost every day but Mrs Maison has had two total knee replacements and finds cycling difficult. Electric scooters may be the answer for her if we fancy nipping out for a coffee, or something a little more vinous.

I feel they could be very dangerous. On a pavement most People only look ahead but move to go around other people , you would not expect someone on a scooter coming from behind .
put them on the roads !

I had a mature guy on one that he had borrowed, I say that as he didnt have a clue that he was holding me up and the cars behind me! he was in the middle of the road, steering quite erratically and at 12/15MPH!
I waited, and waited behind him, but he didnt get the message, he just carried on, so I gave a burst of the horn, and the poor guy nearly shat himself! there was a roar of laughter from the kids on the pavement also, maybe he borrowed it off one of them, who knows?
They will be a deathtrap if allowed on busy city roads, they will not be insured, they will not have had any training, not even a cycling proficiency test (which should be mandatory for all two wheel road users IMHO) so God help us if they damage anything, anyone, or themselves
Seem to remember some celeb getting killed in London last year in busy Central London Traffic, she should have known better at her age that they were illegal and not safe on London Roads, but she chose to ignore all that to her detriment.
They are OK used in the correct manner, but kids, being kids means that will probably be used where they are not supposed to, with sadly fatal consequences.

I have decided to buy one and hire it to my wife at 1p per month.

She has said she will also buy one and hire it to me at £10 per month.

That way we will both be legal but, as usual, she has the better deal.

Fabulous piece of kit can be put under the bed in the garage, shower room, jump on pop down the road to the shops or pub(!!!) its even used to go to work, go on you know you want one:giggle:(y)

Just on the news at this very moment, sounds like they are only going to be legal in the UK if they are through a hire site. Maybe in time they will become legal to own and use anywhere.

Further update, only a few city will try them. I expect the government will wait to see how many people are killed before allowing full use.

I have followed the e scooter legalisation debacle and (this is educated guesswork) if i were to buy another one to go with the one i have got (the wifes)i would ensure it met the same top speed and kw that electric bikes are governed by in this country.
I m working from memory but 15.5 mph and 250kw are the figures in my head.

When they have trialled the hiring and look to legalise personal ones then my betting would be on those figures covered in existing legislation.

Luckily when i bought hers it did fit into that category and was about 150 quid from feu vert

Is it hired scooters only as they will have insurance?

That is correct.
It is possible to get insurance for a scooter after it has passed its mot !!!!!

That makes sense.

Possibly after this trial they will allow private ownership provided you have insurance.

I was in Tel Aviv relatively recently and there were hundred on the roads.

I quite fancy one of those.

Fantastic news this ... these things are amazing - huge torque and can go like the proverbial brown stuff off a shovel.
Green, non- polluting (sort of), cheap urban transport, cut congestion in towns and cities at a stroke ...... and the best news ....
cyclists won’t be in the firing line as much when they’re legalised 😁😉😉😉

They were looking at the law to run it as per ebikes but cv has ushered them forward as an extra means of personal non polluting transport.

This part would appear to be a rushed trial and wasnt mentioned 6 months ago when i took a look at it.

Interestingly the met charged a couple of briefs on tower bridge abiut 6 months ago. My suspicion is they were probably targetted so the law could challenged on it. If not it was just because they hate briefs 🤗

They are banned on pavements.

My 18 stone mate pulled an inadvertent wheely on one in “fast” mode. Never mind bears in the wood - he almost had an accident through sheer surprise 😁 Pneumatic tyres, decent brakes ..all good.

But they can do proper speeds and weigh a fair bit. I joke about cyclists, but these things in the hands of idiots, could cause some problems.
Solution as ever is a bit of education and make sure the idiots are held to account... but they’re coming to a street near us very soon I’m sure

I have a couple of scooters in the garage and use them in Europe with no issues.

My 74yr old mum used one of them in Calpe over Christmas. She made it look easy. They are great fun.

Some have seats so easier to use
