I know there has been lots of chat on this site about this but am totally bewildered. Am I correct in thinking that when renewing my licence for a second time (over 70) for driving a vehicle between 3.5 and 7 tons and towing a trailer, I need to fill out D2 and D4?

It depends that they say when they send renewal letter. Mine said that I could self declare online, there were a few medical questions. All was ok until it suddenly said that I could not proceed as my photo was stamped with a date that was within 60 days of renewal. This meant I had to send the forms by post with a new photo - even though it was a new photo at 70. It was still a self declaration medical form though, which was included with the renewal letter. So I had to post the application - end of January - no sign of them doing it yet. No D4.
If I had done it straight away it would have been done online and quick - but Christmas busy time distracted me.

Literally just booked a medical with D4Drivers for tomorrow lunchtime for my C1 which I suddenly realised was due a week or two after we return from Ireland. Optician emailed my current prescription ready for the medical doc.
DVLA did send me a reminder but I had to ask twice for the D2/D4 pack which arrived this morning - that's why I remembered!

Riverbankannie when you say DVLA said you could self declare on line for your new driving licence over 70 are you sure it was for the C1 licence above 3.5ton. I thought we all had to apply via post with D2/D4 forms with medical completed by a doctor to be able to drive the extra weight vehicles.

Definitely to renew C1, maybe just temporary solution whilst they have such severe backlogs, but it says to renew a short term medical licence for those with a single medical condition. If more than one still had to be done by post.
I cannot tell you how it is going to go, I am surrendering my C1 anyway.

I thought the short term medical renewal was for a non C1 licence. Mine indicated that if I wanted to renew a C1 I had to send the D2 and D4 by post ,not online.

A lot of doctors can do the eye test without a separate one from an optician. Just ask when boking.

Before I suspended my PSV & HGV licences, all I used to do was book my yearly sight test with the Optician and take my form along and ask them to fill and stamp it. They never refused?

Do you have to apply for a new driving licence with C1 entitlement when you reach the age of 70 even though your current licence with C1 entitlement doesn't expire for another 2 years which in my case I'll be 72.

Thanks

Thanks Larry.
I keep reading about “60days” does this mean you can’t apply for a new licence 60days before the current license expires or, you must apply before 60days.
Thanks

You can apply 3 months before expiry date and with a D4 medical completed no more than 4 months before expiry date.

The new licence will be dated from processing date and run for 3 years so your new expiry date may be less than 3 years from the current one.

Thanks again Larby. I have previously held a full LGV class one licence. Which I did not renew about 3 years ago. Do you know if I can apply to have all these classes reinstated on the new license
Thanks once again

I noticed a friend who had held HGV licence had a 3800 kgs MH. I asked did you pass the medical OK, it was then he realised he did not have C1 anymore either. He did the necessary for C1, applied and got it back.
So you can get it after letting it lapse if you complete D2 and D4 satisfactorily.

Jus as an adjunct to that, the D4 medical is valid for all categories of licence for C1 and above.

Yes. the C1 expires at age 70 even if it doesn't "expire" on licence for some years afterwards.

DerryW Maybe check the back of your driving licence as the C1 entitlement may expire when you are 70 but the remaining categories will run till the expiry date of your licence.

Thanks Edenside.
I renewed my licence on 14/05/2021. (4a on front of licence)
Expiry 12/05/2024 (4b on front of licence)
C1 issued 24/09/1975
C1 Expiry 12/05/2024
A, B1, B, C1, D1, BE, C1E, D1E, fkinpg all expire on 12/05/2024

So you can see why my original question #10

I have even posed the question to a policemen friend, and he was unsure.

Thanks as always.
