Hi motorhomers. Hoping you can advise me. Currently running a Burstner Elegance 660 2006 2.8 tdl 5 speed gearbox 60000 miles. Body in excellent condition but, in spite of regular service, engine beginning to show signs of age - sump rusty, injectors proving troublesome. Looking at replacing it with 23000 mileage Burstner Nexxo with 2010 2.3 engine 6 speed gear, just as good condition with garage guarantee. How will the performance compare ref power, reliability and fuel usage please?

Hi and welcome.
first i think the 2.3 is a great performing motor.
BUT
i would have thought that the change you are proposing is a huge task. the engine management system will be completely different and your existing chassis will have few of, if any, of the required ECU's to facilitate running that proposed combination.

unless of course you have access to a complete chassis to take everything from including wiring looms and are competent enough to complete the task.

If you're happy with the van you have spend the money on the engine , I had a 3.0 daily pickup for 5 years from new , it had over 300k on it when I sold it , nothing ever went wrong , it was even still on the original clutch

It's lack of use that causes problems not mileage.

Not running your motorhome is the worst thing you can do.
try to take it out at least once a fortnight a good 50/60 mile run.does it a world of good…
and it’s nice to be out in it.lol

Thanks Nev. I think you're right about usage. When I bought it I should have been more suspicious of the low mileage for the year. From the servi e reports later saw it had been kept on the Atlantic coast by an elderly couple. Of course the fibreglass wasn't affected but the engine and other exposed parts hadn't liked the low mileage irregular usage. We use it extensively here and abroad now, but I fear the damage has been done. The newer one has a much fresher feel to mechanics. Had a 2.8 in a Swift Kontiki before that. But have no experience of the 2.3. Keen to buy if I have reassurance it won't lack power.

As Figaro has said the sump is a common issue on the 2.8jtd engine. Changed ours twice in the 16yrs we had it. No a big expense and easy enough to do. Obviously change the sump gasket at the same time. I also had to changed the fuel tank on ours but that wasn’t job.
