Hi everybody, I'm not one of those m homers that gets paranoid about mpg but after switching the in dash reading on I was a bit shocked to find my 2009 3.0 tri axle bessacarr returning 17-20 mpg on the motorway at 60mph, compared to my previous 2005 2.8 ducato always around 25-30 mpg ? is this the norm or is this a bit low?, rgds Kevin

Had a tag 25 mpg best and last light on the pedal ;)

Was your handbrake off ?
But seriously, remove any excess weight that you are carrying.
eg, water, stuff in the garage not being used etc

van was running fairly light, very rarely run with much water, as for removing excess weight she who must be obeyed will be properly pissed at catching the train. if 20mpg max is the norm then what will be will be but I was a bit disappointed compared with the old 2.8.

Try dropping the speed by a couple mph - although we're not a tag, found the mpg improved noticeably when I cruise at 58mph (i.e. just above the trucks) rather than 60. The overall travel time difference is negligible, but you do have to concentrate for a bit until you get used to it. Also I only use cruise control when the roads are reasonably level - when climbing and descending the "lag" on the CC tends to make the engine work harder IMO unnecessarily.

As Terry said drop a few mph and it will make a difference, you could get the mrs to push you a few miles and that will up your mpg.....??

I used to have a Hobby 3 litre tag axle which averaged 31 mpg.

Our 3.0 auto does about 28mpg at 65mph on cruise, running weight usually close to max ?

We average 24mpg fully loaded 8.25m tag these figures are just using the dash figures and normally cruise at 60mph.

2000rpm is the sweet-spot for many diesels, I find. For most Fiats this seems to be about 55mph(ish) in top gear.

Normally in good driving conditions we get between 20 - 22 with our tag c class. Best was just over 23. Towing car on A frame we get between 18 - 19 most of the time. (y)

Try doing a physical fuel consumption check as against the trip reading. We averaged wimpy with a 3ltr tag but it varied considerably due to various conditions
