Fiat Ducato 2.5
Hi all
I have a Ducato 2.5 diesel 1997 which wont start. When I turn the key there are some clicking from relays but there's no voltage on the starter motor solenoid. I've tried put 12V directly on the starter motor and it cranks as it should.

Before I dig deeper into this I want to check out with you guys if there any common issues that could address this. Or if someone can point me in a direction?

Best to you all!
Thomas

Do you have an engine blocker ?
If so, they are well known for self activation.

Switch the engine blocker on, wait a few minutes and then switch it off.

Sounds like a defective soleniod. The contacts that close the feed to the starter motor get eroded or fouled after time, they pass 200-300 amps peak current. You probably either need a new solenoid or to diss assemble the old one(if possible), file the contacts and re assemble. Sometimes a few sharp tap with a hammer will free it but its only a temporary fix.

Immobiliser?
Direct 12v to starter with ign turned on?

The solenoid work. I put 12V (from battery) on it and the starter motor cranked.

When I turn the key there's no voltage going to the solenoid.

Don't think there's an immo on it, there's no immo-symbol in the dashboard.
Haven't tried direct-12V with ign on, gonna do that.

Don’t think they did immobilisers on Diesels in 1997.

the ignition switch occasionally used to fail.
It could also be the earth connection from engine to chassis/battery?
Mine used to do what yours is doing . I used to leave the ignition on & start it using the wire to solenoid direct from battery. Eventually found that it was the spade connection on the end of the wire attached to the solenoid.

It started when I put ignition on and direct 12v to the solenoid. So, shouldn't be that hard to figure it out. Thanks for good input!

Anyone know where I can find wiring diagrams for Ducato? I've googled but didn't find anything good.

There is no immobiliser on that year of van. Put a jumper lead from the negative on the battery to a clean body on the engine. There will be a small cable to the injector pump make sure there is 12 volts to it when ign turned on.
