hello

fingers crossed, but i might be allowed to visit france this summer. I'm planning to visit 'camping couderc' in the gorge du tarn, heading down from the north. But i dont want massive amounts of stress - this is my first time driving the van in europe. The roads look a bit 'twisty turny' to me, which stands to reason with it being a gorge and everything. Anyone know how challenging it is please? There is always next year.

Have you tried Google maps and standing the little yellow man on the road and moving him around for a look... 👍

thanks, just plan the route carefuly i guess

Just drive steady and familiarise yourself with the route and all will be fine.

Lovely drive, better to go southbound as you re away from the overhanging rocks. plenty of places to stop in Millau

interesting thread. wouldn't mind doing the gorge du tarn myself when we're next in France. as a matter of interest how many miles/kms is it from one end to the other.
thanks

I’ve done the gorge a few times, this is what I did it on last time.

The critical point is when are you going and if in July or August you would probably be advised to have a booking for Camping Couderc. Driving down the Gorge in August would be unpleasant I fear unless you can do it in the early morning.

The Gorge is a tourist magnet but outside the busy period is a must. Our explorations I described in a thread a few years ago starting at post #269 here and on into the next page. This was early July and it was almost quiet but the campsites were filling up.

Edit and afternote: re-reading that thread reminded me of the wonderful contributions from our beloved and much missed Anthea M :(

Dont discount the Gorges de la Jonte just out of Millau and north east I think. Vulture place up there you can pay to go in or just sit outside and pay nothing.
Plenty of places to stop, park the van and wallow in the river

And do NOT attempt to approach Couderc by driving through Issigeac on a summer Sunday! Huge and mega popular market there on Sundays all year round. Approach via Beaumont. Signposted off the B to I road, then turn into the campsite approach lane - all tarmacced. Reception buildings (and all the other stuff) now to your left. Excellent English spoken. (large Dutch family owned it for decades) Open Podium night every Thursday and all sorts of other entertainment, (Quizzes in English) good restaurant, bar, decent shop, nearest supermarket and other shops including Pharmacy & GP surgery in Beaumont.

This is in Dordogne ( a naturist site I think) ; the Op is referring to site in Ste Enimie. Agreed, drive north to avoid overhangs.

Nice small free Aire above gorge to the SW of Millau, my notes say...

"Very pleasant and peaceful parking on almost level gravel carpark overlooking the Millau Viaduct. No services except composting toilet. Road passes by but little noise. Approach from west as access from village is very difficult. Camping cars now restricted to North carpark."

Well worth doing that one, I did that on the bike.

Not as busy and just as spectacular.

No problem at all. Make sure you use the aire at Peyre (Compregnac). Stunning views and free. One of the best we stayed on. View attachment 493464

Stunning picture, that looks like the one that I mentioned above.

Sadly the one half was not available to motorhomes the last time we visited but it was when these photos were taken, we are in the silver Volkswagen.
