I, like others, am an addicted follower of @Nothernraider and have a separate fantasy life (unknown to my wife) where we sell our Autotrail Delaware, buy a suitable van for more adventurous journeys, and explore the globe! However today I read that woodburners are Satan’s children and will destroy the planet! My dreams have disappeared in woodsmoke😢.
Is it true that tiny particals from even the most efficient woodburners are that harmful, or is the risk one worth taking? Just asking to preserve the dream…..

I’ve grown up most of my life with open fires, not stoves and last time I looked I’m still very much alive.
In fact i think we’re the first generation to not have had just about nothing else in the way of heating. Even the fire station I worked at for the first twenty years of my service had a coal fired boiler.
Our parents and all the generations before only had open fires. Don’t worry about it, forest fires, volcanoes erupting, sulphur springs, geysers all chucking hot unburnt gases into the atmosphere are going to have a much greater effect than your van based log burner.

Phill D In the last two years I have watched a large number of Narrowboat vlogs, Robbie Cumming amongst then. Many pick up flotsam and tree damage branches and then fairly quickly use it as heating fuel. This can only be dried, not seasoned, so I suppose they are exposing themselves to harm. Ironically I have never seem any narrowboat vlogger smoking.

Lots of people did get to very old age using a wood burner every day of their life, so I wouldn’t be to worried, eating processed food on the other hand? ……..

Wood burners contribute significantly to atmospheric pollution, that’s why they are bad

  • Burning wood accounts for 38% of PM2.5 emissions, compared with 12% from road transport.
  • Emissions of fine particles from domestic wood burning more than doubled between 2003 and 2019, from 20,000 to 41,000 tonnes.

Nice figures. How much had the emissions reduced between say 1940 and 2003?
I would hazard an awful lot, they’re probably nowhere near as high now as they were when my mum was little. For some reason you’re not complaining about their emissions.
We in the village have just had a month of power cuts lasting from a few hours to many days. In many of the homes if they didn’t have open fires they went cold. I suppose you’d call that progress.

glenn2926 That explains why they all have a weedhatch!
Is that AKA the "Cratch"...🤣

Wood burner in a van... I'd be making sure it is absoloutly airtight other than the vents, not using a Heath Robinson Gas bottle conversion 😲

And I'd have a "Fire Angel" on board.

Cheers

There was a comprehensive discussion on pollution earlier this afternoon which you may find helpful.........

Twenty years ago or so we were told to buy diesel vehicles to save the planet now they are devil engines. Ten years ago we we’re told that burning wood was carbon neutral now it’s killing us.
I wish these bloody “experts” would make their minds up!

No the cratch is the cover over the well deck. It has a cratch board (the top piece of timber) and a cratch cover usually canvas. This a encloses The well deck to give a covered space.
I don’t have a narrow boat but have asked this very question of boating mates.

I think you’re only remembering snippets.
Trees are a carbon store. So planting trees is good.
Burning them when grown then releases the carbon.

If you’re in a cycle of burning and planting trees that’s close to carbon neutral.
Especially compared to burning oil and coal. Those needs many 1000s of years to be in a neutral carbon cycle 😳

50 odd years ago they also said that we would soon be entering a new iceage

JFF 🤪
Each was a different group of “they” though :xrofl:
Source

From that source: -
Our climate change “they”
..you have a widespread scientific consensus, supported by national academies and all the major scientific institutions, solidly behind the warning that the temperature is rising, anthropogenic CO2 is the primary cause, and it will worsen unless we reduce emissions.

The old Ice Age “they”:
In the 1970s, there was a book in the popular press, a few articlesin popular magazines, and a small amount of scientific speculation based on the recently discovered <Broken link removed> and the recent slight cooling trend from air pollution blocking the sunlight. There were no daily headlines. There was no avalanche of scientific articles. There were no United Nations treaties or commissions. No G8 summits on the dangers and possible solutions. No institutional pronouncements. You could find broader “consensus” on a coming alien invasion.

Quite simply, there is no comparison.

I would not let it spoil your dreams buy the time we do destroy the plant you would have popped off long before them , so enjoy your dreams and don't worry about nightmares
