Hi there

I have an IVECO Daily that I am not legally allowed to drive because I only have a car driving licence.
Now, I have been told I am able to downplate it so it's under the limit of my licence, being 3,5 tons. I have taken it to weight it and it came back 3 tons and 40 kg, so that's perfect.

After emailing my application to the DVSA, the person added at the end of their email the following sentence:
Please note:- DVSA guidelines when down rating vehicles to 3500kgs require a payload available of 1000kgs. Therefore, any vehicle with an unladen weight of over 2500kgs may not be down rated to 3500kgs.

I am lost, if they just add weight, what's the point of all this?? And there is no way I can make changes to bring the weight down to 2,5 tons....

If anyone has been in a similar case and has info I'll gladly take it..

Thank you in advance,
Sarah

You need the help of either svtech on van weight engineering, the later is cheaper by a long way.
They will help hyou prepare the documents needed for DVLA not DVSA.

If what DVSA was applied then few motorhome s would get registered. While 460 kgs payload is not a lot there are many many motorhomes sold daily with that or less.

Invest in a phone call to van weight engineering then you will know the facts and I believe if they prepare your documents it will be in the region of £150 to £200.
But it will be sorted and accepted by DVLA.
Good luck.
Oh and welcome.

Thank you for your answers.

Has anybody done the procedure? Could anybody explain in details what happens?

Thank you everyone again:))

In brief....

V5 details of vehicle
Pictures of various parts of vehcile to also show suspension
Your details
Image of existing VIN plate(s)
They then complete multiple forms for you and post them to YOU.
You sign a couple of bits and send these docs and V5 to the place they tell you to.
Once approved by DVLA/DVSA VanWeight will also send you a new Vin plate.

Daft as it sounds don't use recorded or registered post as that goes to a different building, sits in an in-tray for 2 weeks before being posted to the (probably) remote specialist at their home to be checked.

@ Sarousch

If you have subscribed here then welcome.

Please keep us informed of the result of this application.

I personally think that somebody at DVLA is talking out of a rear orifice. Maybe picking up some item from for instance downrating from 12t to 7.5t, where it might be sort of logical.

When you get the V5 back from DVLA check the revenue weight AND gross weight are the same weight.
DVLA have a habit of changing the revenue weight but leaving the gross weight as it was.
Also, just so you know, you will pay more road tax at 3500kg and they won't do the change until it's paid.

Maybe they are talking of a base van?

1t would be about right for interior and payload on a pvc?

I think you got a numpty at DVLA who hasn't a clue talking total BS.
Before paying money to Weight Engineering worth raising a complaint with DVLA I think you can do it online.

Complain as much as you want, it won't even get read never mind acted upon.
DVLA have been employing clueless desk jocky's for years and nothing has changed.

I used the online complaints and got a very quick and helpful response. It certainly got read and acted upon. Have you ever tried using it?

You don't need to use, or pay, anyone else to do the downplating for you, you can do it yourself via the V5C - page 2, section 1 "Change my Vehicle Details".

Just put in the new revenue weight (ie 3500kg) and any other bits required. If you can get a printed weight certificate to send along with a covering letter explaining you want to downplate and will have X payload available there shouldn't be any problem.

You'll need to pay the additional tax for it as it's more expensive for the lower weight (yes I know it doesn't make sense!), some info here:
