Double glazed units replace with single glazed?

Hymer B514
Like others on here we have suffered from blown double glazed cab windows and apathy from Hymer/dealer in offering any support for this obviously inherent fault. We have read that even when replaced (at cost exceeding £3000) the risk of failing again is fairly high and warranty offered only for one year! We noticed that a member had requested single glazed replacement from Hymer which appears to have been provided. Any ideas if this would be available to other Hymer? Have asked Dealer but they don’t seem to want to pursue this -perhaps as it’s not a catalogue part?

Have emailed Hymer direct three times - each time they have “closed” my enquiry saying it was resolved! No one takes ownership 😡

When I had my rv there was a place in the uk that would make and replace the double glazed units for them that had suffered your problem (I assume your glass is flat?)..dont know if they still exist but would be worth asking on an rv forum

These are probably the people you meant.

You will need the original window for them to copy

It comes down to how easily your frame comes out of the van and if it can be split to remove the double glazed panel, if you then want to go single glazed I would think that laminated would be best but of course you would need spacers to make up the thickness in the frame, sometimes the old misted panel can be split cleaned up and remade with new glazing bars, the original will most likely be 3mm toughened glass with 6mm glazing bars if the glass can not be saved and re-used they can be remade but would need to be 4mm toughened with 4mm glazing bars instead of the original 3mm and 6mm spacers as 3mm is a bit specialist as far as toughening is concerned apparently.

How do I know any of this? answer: I replaced the misted units on our N+B Flair but when I broke one I had to get it remade by CN glass in Banbury, it's a bit of a job DIY but you can save a small fortune.

I just wish someone would come up with a company that would actually do it. The replacement in getting the glass done is the simple part. Taking the things out is a nightmare and a long job. I have loads of people saying, bring it to me and we will replace the glass, but none saying we will get it out.

Any agricultural / plant glass company should be able to make up flat panel toughened glass to suit.

it can be done and it's not actually difficult.... But it is very very time consuming. In mine, there are alsorts of furniture that has to be removed. funflair would give a better look at hours involved but I won't be doing my own as it's just too time consuming.

However, every company I have found that has done one previously refuses to do another as they say the time is to long to invoice. I know people ho have paid up to 6k to have it done including the windows, but the actual window is about £1500 for a new unit or a DG firm will knock one up for about £200

Aren't single glazed windows going to generate a lot of condensation?
Your windscreen isn’t double glazed so this is just an extension of that -we have always used external silver screens and ventilated the van so have had no issues

Thanks guys but we don’t want to do it ourselves-too much risk of things getting damaged or not going back correctly to take the chance. We’ve had loads of companies that can do the glazing part but not the dismantling and fitting! So if we have to cough up for a Hymer dealer to do the fix then we’re not enamoured at the prospect of having to do this all again in a few years if new windows fail. I read that someone got Hymer to supply single glazed unit ( windows and frame) which was direct replacement - I’m sure it was on this forum, would be keen to find out if this worked out.

The other thing is double glazing is warmer and quieter.
The difference between DG windows and single in how they perform in the cold winter in the alps is phenomenal.

Just a thought, what about trying a Hymer Dealer in Europe if its cheap enough it may well pay for the trip, Hymer always push customers to thier dealer network so my guess is you wont get satisfaction from the factory in that way.

On more modern RV's all of the windows are glass and double glazed. My friend had an issue with a window out of warranty and he spoke with a couple of local window companies, and it was arranged that he took the "glass" out and took it to them at an arranged time, they "split the glazing, cleaned the glass and re-double glazed it (whatever it is they do"

I can't remember what they charged it was nothing in the grand scheme £30 -£40

They made a good job of it when I inspected it over a beer expecting it to be shit! It wasn't

Every report I’ve heard for European motorhomes is that it’s extremely hard to split the frame and get the glass out so glazing/window companies won’t touch them unless you take the glass out yourself in one piece and take it them. Lots have tried and it can get smashed whilst trying it.

Of course the Motorhome manufacturers all want you to take it to their dealer for a couple of thousand quid profit.

Try a local Double glazing unit company. If you take it out they will copy what you have. Depending on thickness of unit that will determine the thickness/size of spacer bar/glass.
They will need 3/5days turn around for toughened glass then probably a couple of days before they make the unit up 🙂
A small DGU maker would be best as a large co will not be interested unless you know someone 😉 I would be very surprised if the cost of a unit exceeded £60/ 100
