Hi All,
Strange request I know but looking for recommendations for a dog ramp that can also take my weight, about 14 st

reason for looking for this is that our poor old girl just can’t do the hab entrance anymore (2003 Autotrail). The small steps means she tries to launch herself from the floor of the van to the ground, bypassing the internal step down and the omnistep!

the hab door is quite narrow and after getting the old girl out it would be a challenge to remove a ramp and so using it myself to get out would be the ideal.
very happy to entertain other workable suggestions. Have dismissed steps simply due to their size but on reflection would welcome recommendations too as they could live more permanently outside.

Have also posted this in the dog section but thought some, If you’re like me, enjoy a bit of internet research 🧐
Take care Funsters

The motorcycle ramp may take youre weight but I don’t think our muttly would like walking on a rough metal surface. I wait to see what you decide to use because our recently adopted muttly is struggling with stairs let alone the motorhome step.

Maybe line the ramp with carpet?

Will take measurements, do some research and let you know.

Instead of carpet how about a non-slip piece of bathroom floor covering? Washable and can be left out in the weather....

Sawn down scaffold plank, free and easy. Couple of screws or similar either end to secure it

We had an Alfa Romeo Shed, sorry, Guilletta, and SHMBO bought a specialist folding dog ramp to get the older and fatter of our two Samoyeds into the boot, the dog took one look and wouldn’t go near it! Still kept putting her paws on the bumper and waited to be “boosted” into the boot!

Machine mart used to do some folding aluminium ramps could be worth a look

the big issue with a ramp to the hab door is you have to remove the ramp to close the door. Plus the higher the doorstep the longer the ramp needed

We have a blind dog and now use a very large caravan step. This allows her to get fully on the step before entering the doorway. She refuses to use a ramp, as does our older dog with arthritis. He prefers the indignity of being lifted in rather than walk up a ramp

Perhaps a carpet runner could be put on it.

Our old dog didn't like the omnistep or an aluminium caravan step, always tried to jump over them, both going in & out. We found wrapping a piece of "astraturf" round either step cured the problem.

We use a sliding wheelchair ramp - one of a pair. Similar to motorcycle ramp. We put a layer of non-slip material which is light and easy to work with.

I bought a set of these (5') to load the mobility scooter into our vehicles, easily take's the weight of myself and scooter and cost £79.99 in 2019.
Very pleased with them. If you could fix or rest them on your step when on a pitch you would be able to close your door as well.

Lots to choose from on ebay and etc'
I first sent for the ones that look like they are gritted as I thought they would be better as advertised as non slip, but unfortunately the manufacturing was crap so returned them.

If the surface of a ramp is not very foot friendly use a length of ‘grip mat’ won’t matter if it gets wet/muddy and will stop any slipping!
A strip of breathable awning ’carpet’ would do the same thing.

Stick some carpet on it. It will also make it less slippery when wet.

I assume it's like the below in which case I would level off the step with the rest of the floor and then leave the sliding step closed and use a large double set of steps outside which will allow the door to open/close, it will also create a nice storage space under the step for bits and bobs:

I used belting as a surface for the dog, any packaging factory or brewery with a bottling or canning line will through out plenty at the annual overhaul. Its strong, waterproof and very grippy.

We have folding ramp for Indy. It is made by Solvit and called a Trixie Dog Ramp.
Opened out it is 1.5 m and has a weight capacity of 90Kg. It weighs 4.5Kg. When travelling we leave it folded on the floor at the rear of the van.
It is brilliant ( we use it for the Motorhome and the estate car.). It has a non slip covering on the walking area.

£54.99 ( Dog Ramps website)

Thanks you all for your considered advice.

My poor old pooch prefers to “bunny hop” up any incline so I think I’ll go for a combination of filling in the small step at the hab door (its even caught me out on occasion!) and some nice big steps in preparation for my own dotage too.
I have seen some pictures on accessibility websites but not in stock at the mo. Will try to find a picture of what I mean as it may help others.
Thanks again
Cush

Hard plastic astroturf type doormat. Cheap as chips and can be cut and stuck onto the aluminium (or tied down with zip ties)

ended up going with the massive milenco steps with some foam padding on each step. It’s worked a treat. Been a bonus for the humans too. Wish I’d done it earlier.
thanks for all of the advice. Waiting for the dog cart to arrive too!

I use his one to get my dog in and out of my Defender. Takes 90kg

Sheet of 9mm 4x2 ft plywood and two 3x2 cls.

Cut the plywood into 3 16" x2ft pieces and screw onto the cls timber length wise. Cut the cls/ply into 2 pieces and the remainder off. Hinge with ladder hinges x2

I've made a couple of 12ft Ramps out of 6x2 and 18mm ply for my disabled niece to visit and they have been fine.

Cheers James
