since 2000
We altered our last MH so that Casper could get from the habitation area and have the garage as a kennel, we built a gate so that we could put him in there and with the garage door open he could watch the world go by. Our new MH has single beds in the rear and there is no way that we can do the same for Jacques.
Has anyone adapted the habitation door so it can be left open but the dog can't get out. I've looked at household dog gates, but I think they will take up to much space and we will struggle getting in and out. He's going to be a big lad and hopefully he will settle down ... eventually.

its going to need to be quite sturdy thats for sure! ;)

how about some sort of concertina arrangement ; something like this..

We full timed in our last A class in between houses and had a new rescue GSD Husky Coss who was bonkers. We used a narrow stair gate to good effect and it was strong enough to cope with escape attempts.

Link to similar below:
Callowesse® Saluki Tall Narrow Pet Gate 65-70cm. Pressure Fit 96cm Tall Stair Gate, Use Around The Home, Red/Green Locking Indicators. White Steel. Amazon product ASIN B082WFGDT5

We use a tall staircase gate from Argos. I am wide, awkward and clumsy and find it fine. Stops the dogs too.

He's a good looking lad!
He’s just 6 months old. When he’s good he’s very very good, when he’s bad he’s horrid. We’ve had shepherds for over 40 years but always show bred, he’s working bred and quite a handful, which is why we need the door.

We rescued a Shepherd at the age of 10 months and he looked a bit disproportionate with big ears slim face and slim built. He grew into a lovely looking dog the size of a small pony!

Proper dogs are shepherds. We had Taz, our Shepherd, Moomoo our staffie and both of us in a VW split screen.....talk about cramped.

Hope you sort the gate out. We're also looking for something to go across the hab door to stop our rescue staffie Gracie from jumping out so I'll watch this thread with interest.

Gave up on gates some time ago - could not find anything that was not partially edible..!

Now have 2 options -
1. Combine dogs leads to nylon bike lock secured to wing mirror.
2. stuff them both into collapsible crate.

There was a Funster from Durham way I think camped next to us the the Malvern show last year and he had a wooden gate that swivelled open and closed along its length. Does that make any sense?

Lindam Flexiguard - Portable Safety Barrier Amazon product ASIN B000UJB65Y
We had one of these, it fit the door of our PVC well. It looks like it is not available now, but you may get a second hand one on gumtree or facebay. It folds up very small when not it use

We just used a child safety gate with our large labradoodle. It worked like a tension rod at the top and bottom so no drilling. We just used to lay it on the bed when not is use, stopped him from jumping on our bed at night as well as we sectioned off the bed area.

There is a company at the regular Peterborough shows that sells these..... If you are okay with DIY then you can see how simple the design is, but it works.

That's the one I was trying (badly) to describe :giggle:

I like the look of the wooden one but it would only slide into one side of the door casing as the other channel is taken up by the mossy net. I made a lightweight mesh one, but I’m afraid that Jacques would be through that and the mossy blind very easily. If a fly gets anywhere near he’s off chasing it. We have a homemade gate in the garage and that’s fine, the problem with the habitation door is the width of 63cms, something that folded onto itself would be best.

Wooden diy gate it is then!

I’ll put it on the list, after he’s finished putting fences up to protect my plants.😀

I have ordered one of these, it wasn’t cheap, but it’s lightweight and cheaper than a new fly screen when Jacques chases through it.
When it arrives we will find out how strong it is. We need one extension to get it to nearly the correct width.

We have just fitted it, Jacques can practice escaping next week, we are having 3 days at Hornsea before we go to France later in April.

Lovely looking dog. Cant help with the gate as ours are border collies and we just ask them nicely to stay in and they do. :giggle:

Ali would be better, as it's lighter. We had ali gates on the horse box and they were much better than the wooden ones on the sheep trailer. You need to make one so that it folds away, then it'll be easy to stow :) Something like this but on a smaller scale;

I just bought a piece of plastic coated wedmesh cut to width and edged with grey pipe lagging just drop into place cheap and cheerful😊

I use baby gates, in our campers the tension hold ones worked well but not suitable for our MH so I used just the gate part putting screw in hoops on the top and bottom of one side which go over 'hooks' fixed top and bottom next to the hinge side of the hab door, this means we can remove the gate completely for cleaning etc so it's not in the way.

To keep it closed, ie blocking the hab door, I have a simple turn catch which goes over the top bar; to keep it open I've used a large hook from a broken suction clothes hook with some elastic cord which is secured to the side of the seat with a fold back clip so no need to make a permanent fixing. This worked perfectly until we got Minky who can get under the gate as she's so small, hence the piece of plastic sheet held in place with a couple of bungee cords so it can be pushed up when we open the gate and down to keep the monster in.

Hopefully the attached photos make what I'm on about clearer despite their being in a random order. 😊

We use a expandable trellis bought from Wilkos

Steve fit this one today. No screws it fits by tension. Perfect, it has a gate on it so we can walk in and out and keep Jack safely in (y) It took me a lot of research as our opening is 69cm.
