Hi I would be great fun for any recommendations the van is on a Sprinter 616 (2014) local garage tried everything. Appears to run fine but I have a narrow lane with a 3 in 1 gradient. It used to fly up tanks full. Now even with tanks empty it struggles so much I worry that I might not make it. Thanks in advance.

Have they checked the injector seals, presume they have , but if not it's a very common easy fix.

If it's auto, and something wrong with the gearbox, this guy pretty much knows them inside out

Only answering as I have a Merc 270 with the same engine.

Fuel filter ok?

The reason we got rid of our S820 was the engine was not the right one to fit in a 6 tonne van, ours ran at 6.4 uprated and it was no where near powerful enough, in my opinion they should have used the Vario 4.2 lump.

I've had the van for 9 years now and have done 120K in it up and down the highest and steepest passes in the Alps, Pyrennes, Middle and High Atlas ranges and until recently it has flown on that engine. Plenty of power even when running at 6 tonne. Last couple of years though it has become more sedate. You wouldn't realize it until you attempt 1 in 3 hill from a standing start though, as I said it used to fly up plenty of power.

I've had 2 injectors go over the years no similar symptoms this time. New fuel pump, and blown though fuel line. I know exactly about the fuel filter and change it very regularly. It caught me out first time, I thought the turbo had packed up.

Do injectors completely pack up or can they gradually deteriorate? It still starts first kick. It does make a little black smoke when struggling on the hill.

There are a couple of garages local to me who could probably help, call the office and I'll put you in touch.

Black smoke suggests it's not a fuelling issue but a lack of air issue.
Could be anything from a faulty MAF sensor to a knackered turbo to a plastic end tank coming off the intercooler to an stuck EGR valve.. pointless trying to diagnose that any further without proper data logging investigation.

You could give Gotherington Cross Garage a call.

Ask to speak to Darren he’s the owner and hands on as well.

He knows his way around engines and I’m pretty sure has had one or two Sprinters.

I take my Rapido there for mot as they have a lift that does horse boxes etc

I recommend Pete Robinson, High Ercall near Telford. Were there yesterday for MOT. Pete is on hols at the mo but ultra reliable.

Thanks all. I took it in today to A N Richards just outside of Llangollen. A truck garage, also a diesel specialist. An independent family owned business recommended. It's fairly local to me (14 miles) it's quite a big yard with half a dozen HGV bays. When I dropped it in there were 4 other motor homes parked up waiting as well as trucks and cars.

I will let you know how I get on.
