Pretty much got the hang of it now!
Hi All
Since we've had our 2003 Autotrail Dakota SE on a Merc 316 chassis, we get diesel fumes in the cab when driving with drivers window open. No a/c fitted so we need it open in summer!! No fumes if just passenger window open. Vehicle just been MOTd and mechanic checked exhaust and reported all was fine when I told him about it. I'm thinking it must be a vortex effect sucking the fumes from the ex pipe into the cab. Anyone else come across the same problem? I have bought an extension for the ex pipe so this might resolve it. Haven't done a long run since. The Eberspächer isn't used so it's not that. Obviously keeping the window shut stops it but thanks for any advise.
Cheers

Fit a chrome extension to exhaust pipe, decorative but you will extend the pipe and you can deflect it down and back. EBay, Amazon or even Halfords will oblige.

Hi Otter Spotter
That's what I have done. It's curved so yes I've angled it down and backward facing. Hope it works and thanks for your advice.

It will rain now every time you go out in van so no windows open to test extension 🤪🤪🤪😆😆

Maybe fitting cab door wind deflector will work.
I fitted these to our Peugeot. It smooths the airflow and takes away the buffeting with the window open.

Hi Two on Tour

That's a good idea. I'll see if the exhaust pipe extension I fitted works but if not I'll try the wind deflectors.

I'd be willing to bet that you have a leaking injector seal. The 2.7litre 5pot engine was one of the finest that Mercedes ever produced, but its Achillies heel are the injector seals. The first sign of a problem is diesel leaking from the seal, then it heats up & smells like a leaky exhaust.

We had plenty of them as ambulances & this was a relatively common complaint, never took our mechanics long to fix & was inexpensive.

Google the issue & you'll be halfway to having it fixed. Hope this is helpful. Kind regards..Robert.

Hi Ambulancekid

Thanks for the tip. If the ex pipe extension doesn't work I'll investigate your suggestion. Much appreciated indeed.
