Sorry for the boring thread people!

Just stacking up the costs of ownership and wondering how much something like a Hymer A class depreciates over time.

Looking at spending 25ish.

Keeping it for 5 years or so.

Cheers!

Rick.

At that price point and therefore age, you might even get away with no price drop at all over 5 years if you get lucky and buy at good price non dealer.
if you just get a really good one at a decent price I would say about 1k per year depreciation if looked after and as good or better when you come to sell.

Problem is you will not be getting a 10 year old Hymer A class for £25K

I still feel for the original buyer owner of ours, 59 registered, he kept it for 3 years, we never found out exactly what he paid but list price was well over £100K

It needed an MOT to sell at three years and three months old, we paid £68K they had only done 2100 miles and lost about £40K

You are doing it the right way round ?

I think we have still lost another big lump off ours, maybe still more than you plan to spend in the 6 years we have had it

But by 10 years even if still losing 10% a year the numbers are not quite so eye watering as they are from new

Enjoy your search ??

I bought a 6 year-old N&B Arto privately 10 years ago, so similar to Hymer and N&B Sales team quoted last week a PX price of about £8K below what I paid and that is for selling a RHD in Europe.

I would therefore say Annie's answer above is correct.

The good quality 'A' Class MHs seem to hold up well on depreciation.

Good advice! Thanks.

I’ll probably end up spending a bit more. Hoping to pick something up from a private seller over the winter and snag a deal. Mid 2000 seems doable for 25/30.

Thank god people do buy them new, Martyrs!

I've owned a number of older A class Hymers over the years, never lost money on any of them.
Current van 2001 model, owned it for 5 years and been offered more than I paid for it.
I've often heard that the best ones are pre 2007 but never owned one newer than a 2004 model so I can't confirm that.
I'm always amazed how people comment on the millage per gallon they get but seem to completely ignore depreciation which is by far the biggest cost on a newer van.
I get about 20 miles to the gallon but the thing weighs over 4500 kilo's.
For your budget you should get a very nice van, just choose the internal layout that suits you best as their are lots of variants.
My van model has 5 different internal layouts but outside identical.

I think DavidG58 is going to be right when he says that £25k won't get you a nice 10 year old Hymer A class.

Vans like ours at 13 years old are now being advertised in Germany for a lump more than we paid 7 years ago, so yes I think the reply's that say you might not loose anything are going to be pretty close to the truth, what you will do is spend a little each year keeping it "tip top" for the next lucky owner.

We bought B544 which was 5 years old, 2 years ago (so 7 now) for 51k private.
I see some one just bought a B544 from Travelworld 5 years old....cost 59k.
So there you go, in another 5 years we should get our money back ;-)

Yeah I’m used to running performance cars so 20 mpg sounds brilliant, ha!

Good advice guys. Thanks.

To ignore the specifics of your question, there's a 2001 Swedish N&B Flair 8000iB for sale asking around £27k. Basic kit but should hold its value. It looks like good value.

PM if you need a link.

Cool, actively looking now :-D

Seat belts might be an issue, most seem to be 4 belts and I’ve got to stow two adults and three small children.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!!

The 5th seatbelt could be a problem as they have to be secured to the chassis.

Has the MH and layout ever been offered with 5/6 passenger seat? Maybe a phone call to the converters would be a good idea.
