deisel filter again!

When i stop after a run mine leaks. Intend going to Fiat agent for repair when we get to Pedro's as it only leaks then and only small amount.
Now, my question, Soggy has a newer model which has a metal filter assembly!
Is it possible to have mine changed to one of those??? Thanks

I cant see why not. Being a bio burner I have fitted pre filters to all my vehicles and change the standard factory fitted filter housing with a screw on type canister filter, for easy filter changes.

any one who owns the fiat ducato with the plastic fuel filter should beware that you do need a special tool to fit on top of it to unscrew it and tighten it it fits on the ring on top but easy to do your self but beware as on the bottom of the filter there is a 3pin plug I believe its a water detector but hold the plug in is a silly little wire clip and its one of those when you release it flys of not to be seen ever again wich happened to me can I get a replacement no chance according to every one I have contacted the part is not listed so beware …..

I'm sure Durite will do these plugs, maybe buy a plug for a couple of quid & just use the spring clip ??

Plugs very difficult to source from memory but doesn't come with clip. Typical motor industry set up.

I beleive that Coastal Motorhomes can probably supply the later metal type of fuel filter, I replaced my plastic ones insert without any real problem but I do have the right plastic tool for it

Its a thick plastic can thing that the filter sits in whilst you clamp it in a vice and a top cover which engages in the big dents in the cover plate. The cover wasnt that tight. Think it was made by Draper tools and I found it on ebay. Dont know when I will need it again as the filter didnt need changing.

Having sold my old Ducato I have a spare plastic fuel filter housing and the special tool that is used to replace the fuel filter if anyone is interested.

Yes thats the one for the filter that goes into the plastic filter case. The tool then encases it and ensures the clamping etc is evenly spread. There is a later metal filter that just unscrews like an oil filter I think.
There is also an excellent article by Dave Newell on how to go about it. I found it helps to remove the lid of the air filter but be sure to stuff a clean rag down the open intake!

Mine leaked even after assembling properly with the Draper fixture.
My theory is that the filled resin mouldings creep and relax the clamp load.

I bought a new unit and fitted that keeping a retightened one in the motorhome.

So far so good

I too carry a tightened spare, but I also avoid filling the fan up completely - my thinking being that reduces pressure in the fuel system and makes another leak less likely.

Anyone got any thoughts as to whether this is wise?
