Adria matrix supreme
We have a decision to make, ordered a new matrix supreme last september and until recently November was the best guess for its delivery so in the meantime we bought a nearly new Kon Tiki sport. However have recently been told its here in July so do we keep the Kon Tiki and get our deposit back or loose some on it and get the matrix at last years price which is about 13k less than it is now worth. What do the funsters think we should do??

Which is the van that ticks most boxes? Will you lose more on the Kontiki or the Matrix?

Which van do you think is going to be the best van for using as intended? The cash element shouldn’t really come in to it as the market may go down.

Being a european van the hab door on the drivers side seems to be the only downside , the kitchen layout really works for her in the adria tho

Tough decision for sure. Think I’d use the Kon Tiki and if it does everything you want it to do, then keep it. That way it’s yours, established, you’ll know all the little idiosyncrasies about it and have the memories to match.

You May well sell it, get the other one and spend the days comparing the 2 and miss the Kon Tiki.

It would make the decision a lot easier if i could go and look at one again but the nearest in stock anywhere is 250 miles away. Anyone got a matrix supreme in yorkshire i could have a look inside?

Forget the cash as HoHo in will cost you anyway in the long... Its all to do with what you can live with... Both are good quality but the Matrix has the room over the Sport.

Keep existing MH and delivery of the new one and ‘flip it’ by selling immediately and make a few quid..

I don’t find this a downside, just a different side.

If you can, I would go with the van which works best for you both for the duration of your expected term of ownership. Would you want to ’make do’ if you expect to keep the van for over 5 years? Conversely, if intended as a shorter term pursuit, it may not matter so much.

If you keep the kon tiki and get your deposit back then you’ve lost nothing… you could probably get your money back on the kon tiki if you sold it in the present climate if not a little more… then you have still not lost out but the decision is which one..?

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it…😎

Never quite understood this issue with what side the hab door is on. Ours is on the driver's side. Not found it a problem in 10000 miles of travelling in UK and abroad. Not sure what problem I should be looking for?

The Matrix will be better built and less likely to suffer damp problems.
Probably turn a profit on the Swift and last year's price of the Maxtrix will be a bonus when you next change vans.

Hab door on RHS side is a bonus IMO but we don't do much in the UK.

Alternative to the suggestions above, why not delay the purchase of the new one until September (new reg) which is what you've been planning for, that way you get to enjoy the Kontiki now and get the new one later giving you the chance to sell the Kontiki (for a profit?). Others have done it and as the dealer had stated November as his best guess for it's delivery this would be a date in the middle so both sides should be happy, certainly worth asking.

As per suggestion by Minxy with this added:

In the current climate you should get very near/equivalent/better than you paid for the Kontiki. The current price of the Adria at +£13k above what you’ll actually be paying, as you are ‘price protected’, will already offset depreciation for some time - which could be a fair amount of time if the market continues as it is.

My vote would be to definitely go with the Adria.

Wouldnt we be obliged to purchase as soon as the dealer says it is available to not give them any reason to withdraw from the agreement

If it’s due into the dealer sometime in July then it’s likely to be up to a couple of weeks for them to PDI and arrange anything they’re installing, so it could be within a few weeks of a September handover anyway. As you’ve already had a provisional delivery date of ‘November’ provided I wouldn’t think it unreasonable to agree on whatever suits yourselves - you could always need time to finalise your finances. Have you spoken with the dealer (any dealer) about moving the Kontiki on?

I have made some enquiries about moving it to a dealer but nothing agreed yet. Thinking of advertising it on here or motorhome club site to sell privatly, thanks for youre reply

No, you seem to have a legal agreement which doesn't have a specified 'purchase' date on it, as they are wanting you to bring forward the date from that which they advised you was likely (ie November) it does not give them a 'get out clause' to void the agreement. As mentioned by Orion by the time they've got it, done the PDI, prepped it (and cleaned hopefully!) then registered it you'd be near to mid-August anyway so delaying it for a few more weeks shouldn't be an issue.

They weren't expecting to get the balance of funds from you until November, more likely December, so can't claim they are being put out by you not wanting it until September - the suggestion by Orion it's not unreasonable for you to need time to sort out the financing which you hadn't planned on having to do for quite a while yet - even if you told them you were going to be paying cash it doesn't mean that you weren't getting the funds from a Bond which wouldn't mature until November, or that you hadn't planned on getting a loan and then using the money from that to pay cash, or you could have a foreign holiday planned from July to September etc, I'm sure you can think up reasons to get the delivery delayed to when it suits you, just think it through so that if they ask you have the answers ready as to why you simply cannot make it earlier than when it suits you.

Oh, one last thing that some dealers try, they ask for payment in full before delivery ... REFUSE! Never ever pay unless you have physically checked and taken possession of it.

Our van arrived at the dealers first week in August 2020. By the time it had been through the workshop etc the first date that was agreeable for collection, to both parties, was 16th September.

I’m sure you won’t get a phone call in July asking you to pick it up the next day.

Going by prices in the dealers I was in yesterday, whatever you paid for your current van I’m sure you’ll sell it for more.(y)

When I purchased a new imported motorhome the dealer said they had to pay for it before the constructor would ship it to the UK. The longer they hold it, the more it costs them. Bearing in mind the dealer can probably sell the motorhome to someone else for more than the original agreed price they might well be looking for for an excuse to pull out of the deal.
