Hi all. I am an infrequent user of data as I and my wife have phones (with three) with unlimited data and we don't do streaming for Tv etc. I have seen a smarty sim that appears to be a pay as you go deal for 1 month which can be cancelled anytime or extended, which I think would suit our usage. They also allow roaming at no extra charge. However Smarty use the three network and one advantage I see of having Wifi is to have a second network for the times we arrive somewhere and we both have poor/no service. Does anyone know of similar deals on offer from different providers please?

I’m not an expert on these matters. Your usage is very different to mine as I stream and do everything on my WiFi from my van. I would have thought tho that if your phone signals are week then chances are any SIM card will be so can’t see you will benefit from a back up especially if it’s not on either EE or Vodafone. All the others just piggy back from these main 2 services anyway to my knowledge but direct customers get priority.

We have a Smarty Sim. Roaming is free in the EU, but only up to a maximum of 12Gb per month in data no matter what free data your plan allows.

If you are interested in getting Smarty use this link to get your SIM and we will both get a month's free use (after your first paid for month) plus £15 each in account credit, which can be used to pay future months' charges. The extra £15 is only if you register your SIM by 16 February 2022.

There are 4 (not 2) licensed independent networks in the UK with their own hardware, O2, Vodaphone, EE and Three. Some masts are shared between some or all of these, but each has their own equipment installed on the mast. The rest of the providers piggy back on one of those. Signal strengths can vary a lot between networks, especially in rural areas, because they depend upon where the nearest mast is for the network you are using.

Re the signal strength - agree with peterc10. To add, EE have the contract for the new comms system for UK emergency services so are expanding their network into rural areas where it's not commercially vaible to put sites.

For antennas there is no substitute for height - I've screwed a chinese takeaway container to an aluminium pole and hoist an old Samsung set to be a hotspot inside it about 6 feet above the van roof on two spring clips. Doesn't always work but had enough success to keep on doing it.

We have our phones with EE having tried 3, 02 and Vodaphone over the years. Our jobs needed good coverage and the others were lacking, so we’ve stuck with EE.
We have 160GB/£20 deal each so went for an EE data only 4GB sim for the router, 4GB isn’t much but it’s only £6.40 a month and we “gift” data to it as required.

As we regularly tour the North \ West of Scotland where mobile signal is poor, at best, in some locations we've got mobiles with dual sim capability along with a micro sd card slot for storage. I've got Smarty (3) and O2 in mine and wife has EE and Vodafone in hers so we've got all bases covered.

You may find your mobile has dual sim functionality however it may mean dumping the sd card storage in it if you use it. Worth a look see though.

I have a similar system with my Huawei mifi. I cover it with a condom, attatched to a 9 meter telescopic flag pole.
Only once have I been unable to get some sort of signal, in deepes Wales

Yes, but I have Chinese more often - so better for higher frequency.

or

I tried an Indian one, but it fell down, hit me on the head and put me in a korma.

Either way, I'll get my coat.
