I have a globe car, transit base and after having a cycle rack fitted I noticed that the wheels of the cycle will cover the lights on the van.
I have bought a trailer board to fix to the rack but can I wire it myself and how is it done?
The local garage wants to charge £120 He said its 1 and a half hours work.
Is this feasible please?

Depends on wiring of van and is it canbus which is not the same as old fashioned stuff

Not sure what's meant by Canbus

It would be very easy if you had a tow bar, or tow bar electrics, I assume that is not the case?

£120 doesn’t sound bad. Here are some prices for fitting tow bar electrics at Halfords - look in the 7 pin electric column. That is essentially what you need ( a plugto plug your trailer board into). Halfords is not the cheapest but your local garage price is better anyway

If you use it occasionally you could take the front wheel off and move the bike over.
Canbus is used on most modern vehicles these days and could well take 1.5 hours to wire up.

I just read up what a can bus is and I do have one.
But taking the wheel off is a good tip

Tried that but it comes up as not found.
I'll try taking the wheels off first.[/QUOTE]

I suggest you reposition you bike so the lights are visible. Turn the bike to face to other way or upside down, i.e. wheels up.

If you haven't got a quick release front wheel you can easily adapt it make it quicker to do than pratting around with spanners. One benefit is that you can then turn the handlebars 90 degrees so the front forks sit in the bike rail which means it doesn't stick out so much too.

Minx-girl is correct but if you do turn the handlebars at 90 degrees LOOK UP, as the handlebar ends may be a lot closer to the super soft skin of the rear panel of you precious motorhome. Been there, done that.

Contact a local tow bar fitting place & ask them how much for the electrics only - it may be cheaper than present quote

Canbus only means a cheap interface box that isn't complicated to wire in - it shouldn't add more than a tenner to non-canbus prices. Do remember to remove any triangles on the trailer lighting board.

Canbus only causes serious expense if the vehicle manufacturers towing conversion is used.

If you have a tow bar fitted then there should be a towing electric socket . Then all you do is plug board into that . @Welsh girl also as @Nasher

also if it hasnt

Well We travelled to our rally with the bikes on the rack.
One wheel off as he had quick release on his wheel we took the front wheel off but he had both the rear wheels on the left and I'm concerned that it might be too heavy on the one side.
More experiment needed.

You could put one of the front wheels between bikes at the 'fork' end and bungy another on the outside, or just turn one bike round and put both front wheels between the bikes, that way you don't have to put them anywhere else.
