not sure what ive done but if mss type a word and try to add the cursor between two letters to delete instead of a thin cursor line i get a blue block which then seems to have a mind of its own when i try to delete the letter often removing the whole word

Sounds like you’ve change the action of the Insert key. Press it again.
insert mode is the thin cursor
The block like cursor is overwrite mode.
