Hubby's just told me that Prof Chris Whitty is giving a briefing at 11.00 am.

That should be...........interesting!

The man who so far has failed to predict anything correctly and who could not even wash his own hands and keep 2m apart without catching Covid mmm:rolleyes:

That'll be as much help as a chocolate mask.

(It's not on Radio 4 at the moment).

Very very unfair
I do not think so, he may be a bit cleverer than me and have more knowledge but he predicted that 20,000 deaths would be a bad outcome, over 50,000 later we still have people dying, he caught it and spread it, he stopped testing and track and tracing, he did not advocate quarantine in the early stages for travellers coming here.. He has lost all my faith in him I am afraid.

So who are you actually talking about ?

Some info I've heard:
  • Some of those who have been infected may have developed antibodies after infection (approx 8%, around 3 million) but are not likely to have them long term as they don't last and some people have got a second bought of CV.
  • Testing itself isn't causing a reported increase in infection figures as they look at the overall percentage of those tested, ie 1 in 1000 is the same as 10 in 10000.
  • The rate is increasing, with infections doubling approx every 7 days, the increase is highest in the 20-29 group although all groups have an increase.
  • Daily infected cases per 100,000 (deaths are also increasing proportionately): Spain 300 (20% hospital admission), France 185 (21% hospital admission), UK 69.
  • Approx 70,000 cases today in the UK.
  • Inpatient cases have increased 4 fold since early August.
  • It is a fine balancing act between meeting both health and economic needs.
4 main effects if rate keeps increasing:
  • More direct Covid deaths
  • NHS could become overwhelmed
  • If NHS has to treat Covid cases due to high level of cases it will lead to a reduction in treatment/diagnosis for other illnesses
  • Economic, social and mental health are affected.
4 things to be done:
  • Reducing individual risk: wash hands, use masks, social distancing
  • Isolate the virus: isolate if possibly exposed to virus or are known to have virus
  • Break unnecessary links between households: reduce social contacts at home, work, social environments
  • Science: invest in science, diagnostics, drugs etc
We have to learn to live with the virus, it isn't going to go away anytime soon.

Oi! I started this thread to give INFO on what is being said today, not for you lot to have a debate about who you like/trust or not ... if you want to have a spat about 'personalities' go start your own thread and leave this one to give info to those who are interested.

What do you suggest we do, as a country, to reduce the infection rates?

To be precise!.....................

On 17 March, Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's chief scientific adviser, said keeping the number of UK deaths below 20,000 would be a "good result" from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"If we can get this down to 20,000 and below, that is a good outcome in terms of where we would hope to get to with this outbreak," he told a committee of MPs.

Total deaths from covid.......... 41,777 and NOT over 50,000!

The figure you quoted is after they fiddled the figures, if they used the original method of reporting there would be another 5-6k deaths...

I got the feeling that todays presentation was more of a warm-up for tomorrows (Boris).

Wouldn't be surprised if far tougher measures were announced then :(

Also, isn't the tracking app meant to be released this week?
I wonder how many will download, now they are fining people for not being where they should be?

What do you suggest we do, as a country, to reduce the infection rates?
Perhaps see what Germany have done for starters, clear instructions, masks mandatory indoors, testing capacity and tracing etc. But I am not an expert all I said was I lost faith in him as someone to listen to based on hos track record not that I know better....

How about a few of your own ideas with detail how you would implement them. A bit less criticism and a few more of your resolutions would be a step in the right direction. Boris will be broadcasting his intensions live tomorrow, what would you like him to say???.
