Compressor fridges, specifically Alpicool versions

For anybody wanting I have a little used(4weeks) 240v black tabletop fridge about same size as a 3 way.May also have a 3 way..only used for a couple of months black also a 12/240v compressor cool box..(goes down to -18 so fridge or freezer
Also have the inverter I ran the fridge on (600w).. Lincolnshire .pm if interested

Hi, thanks Oldiesontour, don't have enough space for a separate but thanks for the info

Hi Boldly, I have a 280 ah po4 and a 2000/4000 inverter, I currently have one outlet used for microwave, kettle etc so was thinking of just plugging the fridge into the " spare " inverter socket.
Does that sound like a workable solution? Obviously, taking into account the total load.
I also have a shunt to monitor

My fridge ran happily on 600 w inverter including start up. Split second load of around of 8/900 w

My original inverter blew up for no apparent reason in Spain. I could only source a 600w one from a branch of feu vert( like halfrauds)
It worked fine until the original was replaced by Toolstation on return to the UK .
I think your set up would work well but maybe would need to be careful in the UK in autumn/winter.

Thanks, I only have 200 w of solar which I'm hoping to double, I've got a gennie and the shunt will help keep an eye on things

It's worth checking the overheads of the inverter I currently have 2 x 2kw one uses around a quarter of an amp the other near 1 1/2 amp when on but nothing plugged in so nearly as much as the fridge freezer

I have 295w solar and 2 x 105ah lead acid batteries and have not run out of power yet. I don't use any other 240v stuff and I don't use the van in UK in autumn/winter.
Was at drax without moving for 6 nights no problem but that was August!

I use a vitrifrigo 12v fridge freezer, bit smaller than the old dometic, so gained a shelf.
Sealed all round, and gap at the back, just leave winter covers on all the time.
I don't find it noisy at all, 300w solar runs everything for a week easily, and that's with antique batteries.
Had to lift it in via the passenger door though, and the old one came out in pieces !

can you not find a small 240v Fridge with ice box and run off inverter ?
The more I think, the more it seems like a reasonable option, as long as they are built to cope with the vibration. Or would I be worrying about something that isn’t a factor. Is a compressor a fairly standard item across 12v and mains fridges? I would have to run cables for rge 12v power, so why not run cables from a cheap(ish) inverter? Would it need a pure sine wave inverter for the compressor? Or would a modified sine be sufficient for the fridge? EDIT- RESEARCH POINTS TOWARDS NEEDING A PSW INVERTER
I was looking at Magnums website a couple of weeks back and they have compressor F/F in stock at what looked like good prices 👍
Yeah, been there and everywhere. Inlander seem to have good reviews too but just a fraction too big. Emailed them to see if the feet come off but no response. Alpicool is looking like the cheapest 12v way forward.
The BEKO UL4482W has an 82cm height, that might fit?
Edit: No freezer compartment though
Thanks, will look into what’s available now I’m thinking about that sort 👍

Nice find and cheap. 60w power usage though 🤔 that's 5 amps at 12v. Wonder what compressor is on it.
My secop compressor is listed as 35w if I recall correctly. It runs at about 2.5 amps anyway

A domestic 240 v compressor is designed and hilt the sane way ax 12v

Apparently it has been updated to an LG compressor recently. I don’t know if the consumption data has been updated or needs to be. The 5amps got my attention too. If my maths is right, that would be 120 amps / day. Others report, due to it cycling then it’s much less than this, 40 amps / day. 🤔

Just smiffy, you have any opinions or data on amps used?

Thanks everyone for your input

Hi Cush mines another chinese copy but supposed to have the lg compressor. Have ran it for a year with 2 lead acids and all the other 12v use in a motorhome including the alde heating and cannot say I noticed batteries get too low even winter in uk got 2 days use. You can hear it running on a night but it cycles so not constant and that would depend on what temp its set at and ambiant temp in van. Just watch the sizes as the one I bought was listed as 485 wide 456 deep but when it came it was the other way, it didnt matter too much to me but was another reduction from the seller lol. Best move Ive made to the van, works on a slant, works well in hot weather, if too hot I take off the winter covers from the original fridge vents

From use but not measured amps it cannot be pulling much, even if it is pulling 5amps its only running at 30% time so roughly 40amps a day. Might measure it as Ive just swapped to lithium so can see draw on two monitors and compare.

There is nothing special about the “LG” (Lucky Goldstar) compressor. They are simply using the name as marketing branding.

You may be similarly pleased if you saw Bosch, AEG OR Panasonic, as examples.

I too have just ordered one of these Chinese copies to replace my Vitrifrigo. Did you previously have a compressor fridge and just swap over, I am just wondering if the cable will be thick enough. This is what is printed on my cable is anyone is able to decipher CT2156-AM9B-3-315/frigo-CF2039 Van is a Rapido and fridge is on a 15A fuse.

Not really, I have 400w of solar and two 85a gels, over winter in Spain and Morocco the system coped very well, had not good weather for a while and had a little battery anxiety hence going to 280a lithium now but never thought I’d have to turn the fridge off to save power.. I didn’t really notice a difference from before I fitted it…🤔

Should have said changed rather than update. Not impressed by LG. Just noting that it has been changed and document may not have been updated.

I looked at one of them but the measurements didn't work
Wonder what compressor is on it.
It is a Ningbo Auodan Machinery Company compressor

That is what I have & works well,

As to consumption ,I ran mine on 2 x lead acid that totalled 160Ah for 6 months until I changed a week or so ago to Lithium.Never missed a beat & never any problem with a lack of power.Mind I do have the benefit of sun most days & even on cloudy days just the light is sufficient mainly.

But they have moved away from when they were a cheap make 50 years ago on par with Amstrad, roadstar, etc; & other cheap makers. Now LG ,especially in electronics,TV's are the one to have. + as I posted earlier the compressor has a12 year gtee.

Evening everyone,
I’m thinking of changing to a Dometic 3 way to a 12v compressor. Looking at everything from expensive thetford / dometics to more affordable Alpicool.

The Alpicool says that it needs an air gap round it. My quick question is…has anyone installed such a fridge without the air gap at the edges? I would have 25mm at the top and loads at the back. Tia Cush

Ps Just smiffy, yours still behaving?
We’ve got a compressor fridge fantastic in my opinion 👌👌

For those with a domestic fridge, daft Q but how do you keep the door shut when in motion? Cabinet latch into the frame? Otherwise the dogs will be happy when an abundance of cheese flies their way when going round a left hander.

My new fridge has just arrived, it is the £385 eBay Apicool copy CR85. Confirmed sizes 485 mm wide, 440mm deep, this includes the door, so is much shallower than my old Vitrifrigo.
I have taken pictures of the gubbins around the back and will do amp consumption when I turn it on tomorrow.
The cables it comes with are pretty skinny 16 AWG so will swap them for the Rapido cables.
If anyone wants any info/pictures let me know before tomorrow.

Have you got 2 thermometers you can put one in the fridge/freezer?

for the fridge mine has its own digital display but I still checked its accuracy against the existing probe that was in the old fridge. I now use that probe for the freezer compartment which gives a display for both(y)
