Since 2015, still learning
Evening everyone,
I’m thinking of changing to a Dometic 3 way to a 12v compressor. Looking at everything from expensive thetford / dometics to more affordable Alpicool.

The Alpicool says that it needs an air gap round it. My quick question is…has anyone installed such a fridge without the air gap at the edges? I would have 25mm at the top and loads at the back. Tia Cush

Ps Just smiffy, yours still behaving?

If you have an air gap all around, how do you screw it in place.

What’s the model of Dometic 3-way you currently have?
RM 6361

My OP should have said “from a Dometic 3 way”. Sorry

Have you found a replacement that is the same width and height? I can’t find RM6361 in the Thetford or Dometic replacement charts. You may need to modify the space your fridge fits in.

Yes, and it’s good, runs perfectly well on my two 85a gels although going to lithium shortly… didn’t really notice the power it was taking… nice freezing ice cream and cold beer.. only sort of problems were I don’t think the temperature leds were accurate as I had to turn the fridge to 5-6c otherwise the fridge would freeze the milk at 3-4c freezer I had at -12c.
It’s sometimes noisy but it is right next to my bed.

No airflow around it as it fix’s same as other fridges through the sides with screws, I have a bit of a void at the back where air can circulate… other then the first time I had it through a wobbly but I’m sure it was undersized wire from the van that made the problem as I re wired it and it has been fine since…

Saved a lot of gas as did Morocco and Spain for 3 1/2 months and still got 2 bars on my gasit tank, where as my old 3 way used it all in around 16-18 days

Alpicool CR90X Black 12v Compressor Fridge Campervan Motorhome Boat… can’t post a link but this is the eBay title it come up at..👍🏼

My compressor fridge is wedged in at the sides with a gap at the back and over the top. It's OK for them as the condenser is fan assisted, plus I left my fans in the back wall if ever needed, In Spain last summer I just took off the winter covers though and left the extractor fans switched off

Dometic NRX 90V

Compressor refrigerator, 90 l, black front
£ 1,209

Closest I’ve found, but different width. Would give an air gap but too expensive for me, at the minute.

I was looking at Magnums website a couple of weeks back and they have compressor F/F in stock at what looked like good prices 👍

Long screw and spacers, the gap is to allow air in, to vent the air at the back.
I have rigid foam block as spacer.
That's a shame, I was hoping there would also be an air gap underneath so that the fridge wouldn't actually weigh anything as it would be 'sitting in the air', it would have helped with keeping within weight limits .......🤔

As you see above, a decent 12 volt compressor is very expensive. What with the extra power required (maybe extra battery and solar) you're not going to be ahead of installing a new 3way.

Consider a decent 240 volt fridge and an inverter. Still will need that extra power (battery and solar) if you don't already have excess, but the fridge is way cheaper even with the inverter. There now some cheaper 12 volt compressor fridges.

I installed a Beko TSE 1284 (€220) run off a Victron Phoenix 800VA inverter. Works fine and at correct fridge and freezer temperatures.

And with the current price of cells (which some of us have just bought) it might be a very good option. A separate lithium just for the fridge, plus inverter would certainly appear to be a big saving on a standard 12v compressor fridge ...

We are looking at changing our 12v compressor isotherm drawer fridge to one with a “proper door” as swmbo says. Are domestic fridges really suitable for a mobile environment?

I swopped my alpicool 3 way for a compressor fridge freezer..found much more choice with a 240v and much less money,Inc inverter ((600w china) around 2ah.Seperate doors fridge runs circa 5 Deg freezer -18 .£120 Russell Hobbs eBay inverter around £45 eBay.Had it over a year just done a month in Spain .. very happy with it

There are a lot of compressor FF that are a good bit cheaper than the equivalent 3ways size for size
Obviously not as cheap as a Domestic/ inverter but the saving could go a long way to pay for lithium and panels 👍

We have just changed a cheap Currys fridge freezer after 7 years and about 45000 miles.
Was still working well but had started to use more amp hours.

I have a Dometic 750 Dual Zone which I switch on when still plugged in at home to get everything to the right temperature then I switch it over to my Ecoflow for 12v and it last for ages, I would estimate I could run it it for 4 days I’d I couldn’t recharge my Ecoflow but it’s on an alternator charger and solar panels so that’s not an issue. especially. I also pull it halfway out when I am parked up as it then acts as a footrest so it does get plenty of air around it!

I bought a 60litre CZ fridge that has a 3 year gtee fitted with a LG compressor that has a 12 year gtee . just over 300€

Alpicool are made by the same company

Fitted one to mine just went for the cheapest I could find its got its own circulation fan by the compressor its loads smaller than my old Domestic but still holds about the same as the ammonia fridges have more pipework at the back. put a new cutlery draw above and a shelf to put things. Left the old plastic breathers on the outside for it to breath properly used to fix fridges before I retired so can remember telling customers that you have to let it breath when they had them to close to walls and touching the sides so space around the compressor is more important mine is at the bottom so the heat is rising didnt fancy the ones with the compressor at the top might need space at the sides then :dance2: :giggle:
