Drove into a aire, put my foot on the clutch pedal and the pedal went straight to the floor and stayed there. I can lift it up by hand, then if I press down it goes to the floor and stays there. Breakdown on the way. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Not sure if this is relevant but it might be the slave cylinder. I only say this from same experience with a mk2 cortina many, many years ago.

think there was a thread a few weeks ago on a similar issue with the clutch pedal staying down , but cant remember the outcome...
sorry not very helpful

Clutch hydraulics. Start by checking the fluid level, which may be shared with brake system. Check for any oil drips.

I had the same a few years ago. Concentric slave cylinder so the has to come out.
I found if i lifted it up and down a few times it would work sort of OK, good enough to get me home.
Probably not what you wanted to hear, sorry

Before you had the pedal problem...were any faults showing up? If the pedal goes down and no fault before hand...you can assume it's the slave cylinder as mentioned. The pedal will hit the floor and pull up by hand with ease. No pressure when pushing the pedal down would indicate one of two things..Oil line is 'open' losing oil from the slave cylinder back to master cylinder for clutch application..or seal has blown within the slave cylinder and allows free travel of pedal due to no pressure being felt allowing travel of clutch .

Give us a clue what year how old

Couldn't see a clutch reservoir, but I think I remember reading somewhere that it's inside the gearbox bell housing which means it's going to cost

I had a similar problem in Germany last year. My sad tale is recorded in the forums. My problem was a slave cylinder seal had leaked and gone on to contaminate the clutch. I’m afraid it was an expensive job.

What do you call expensive?

I’m afraid to say it was about €1800.
Breakdown insurance was with Green Flag who were excellent. I was rescued from an aire and taken about 30 k to a commercial Fiat specialist in Trier. There was a wait before it could be fixed but our insurance paid for a hotel for 4 nights. They did a good job but of course the labour rates were premium German commercial garage rates.
Hotels remind me why I like motorhomes.

Yes, I was expecting something around that figure. I also was rescued from an aire. The van has been taken to a Renault agent. They can't repair it for about a week so the breakdown cover has provided a taxi to take us home and will pay the train fare snd taxi when we collect it. I'm looking at the taxi meter which has just gone over €400 and we still have another hours drive.

Good Luck. It will be a pretty miserable few days but I hope everything turns out right for you.

Bryn.

I'm seriously thinking of giving up with Fiat's. Our previous one the gearbox synchro packed up at 25000 miles. That cost €2300. And now this. I drove a Sprinter van which had over 500,000 miles and is still going strong without any major problems.

My clutch kept sticking to the floor whilst going over the Alps a few weeks ago. Pumping the clutch brought it back for a minute, but I decided it wasn't safe to continue on.

I got recovered to a garage. They couldn't find any problems. I'm still driving around Europe. I've done several passes between France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria since (all at a more sedate pace). The problem hasn't returned. I'm none the wiser.

The big problem is, everyone replaces brake fluid but due to the issue of the inboard clutch slave, rarely does the clutch system get bled.. I appreciate the brakes and clutch share a common 'pot' but the fluid in the pipe may be what was there from new !
Over time, brake fluid can ( and does ) get pretty poor, and in a mountainous terrain things can get pretty hot and the fluid boil.
Appreciate it is a pain but when possible I would urge a bleed of the clutch system so the old fluid is purged and replaced my nice new DOT4 stuff :-)

Yeah, I did have the brake fluid changed about 6 months ago. I suspect it was the first time ever on a 12 year old van. Apparently there is an easy to access bleed port on the clutch slave end, but I'm not sure if they bothered to do anything except the brakes. I'll get it done again soon, but insist the clutch feed is done too.
