Thinking of experimenting with our “lower bed” on the chausson 640 rather than the drop down . Has any owners tried it ? Is it comfy and possible to put together without a degree in puzzle solving ?

Not what you're asking but we found it difficult to mount the drop down bed in our Hymer.(well I did) the ladder was hard on the feet. I bought a lightweight aluminium step ladder with decent depth treads and stuck dense foam on the treads for extra comfort. It stayed in the bed during the day and was easy to use at night.

Daughter used the lower bed in our 510. Bit of a fiddle getting the cushions in place, but would be quick if used regulary.

then there are the joins , possibly being in the wrong place.
a matress topper would have to be considered , if the joins were wrongly placed.

can you not lower the bed right down to the bottom seats and use a large step stool, if needed?

We are starting to look at the lower bed on our Chausson Flash 10.

We have always used the drop down bed in the lowest position up to now, but the Grandson who was small enough to fit on a bespoke bed we made for him to fit across the front seats will have to go into the drop down bed next year, tho it won't need lowering as much as if adults were sleeping in it. Which means that we will be on the jigsaw bed.

So we put the jigsaw bed together as best we could, there is an in-fill piece of foam which on our bed is an extra and not part of the seats so it has to be stored somewhere.

So after trying just about every cushion in every position we came to what we think is the optimum placement. However, this arrangement (I think I have a photo somewhere, will look for it later) means that we are using two of the seat back cushions in the middle of the bed.

The back cushions are not flat on the face, but rather convex, so it means there is a couple of hillocks in the middle of the body. We think that we'll get round this by getting two new cushions made for the seat backs but with flat faces. So having determined that, we decided that by increasing the size of these two cushions just a little bit we can get rid of the in-fill piece that is needed on the standard bed, so a double win.

I actually think the lower jigsaw bed will be quite comfortable, tho we will probably use some form of mattress topper.

Ah that sounds complicated

It’s not an issue for us but it’s an issue for our ageing dogs that like to join us in the morning and refuse to use the stool we got

Ah that sounds complicated

I have found the photos.

The first one is viewed from the Hab door facing passenger seat. The two material covered items are the infill cushions. Long story as to why they are material covered. You will see that we turned the seat cushions round under the window, so that the lump in the cushions which is normally under your knees is now under your head.

The two plain brown, striped items are the seat backs. Both are convex so we are getting new ones made with flat faces. The gap is for an infill cushion.

So if we made the smaller seat back cushion longer and a little wider it would take up all of the space normally filled by the infill items, hence they not required. There would be a small space of about 4" x 2" left to infill, but that is easy catered for.

The second picture, taken from near Hab door again, shows the other end of the bed. Again we have reversed the seat cushion for the same reason as above.

The third picture shows the side of the bed. Now, when the seat back cushion is in that position the end of that cushion has about 10" of cushion hanging into free space. For us it is not really a problem, but if a really heavy person was to sit on the very end of that cushion it might just tip up and land them on the floor. Lay your cushions out that way and see what I mean.

To combat that, even tho it's probably not a problem for us, when the new seat back is getting made I am going to alter it's plywood reinforcing (on the back of the cushion, you can feel it) so it incorporates a folding, retracting leg. So that when the cushion is in the bed position the leg can come out and provide more support to that end.
