I know that a large number of Funsters have dogs but but about cats? How do they exercise them? I presume a litter tray is always available but what when then the motorhome gets too hot? We have had several cats in the past and know they spend a lot of time just sleeping but does the lifestyle suit them? Thanks

Lived for just short of 2 years in my motorhome with 2 cats and 2 dogs. They were all fine.
Oldest cat could go outside as long as we were somewhere rural. Other cat walked on a lead and harness.
Travelled in a large crate together —- didn’t want to roll down a window and have a cat leap out !
Had 2 x large folding canvas type crates for outside. I could bungee them together, creating a long enclosed tunnel so they could stay outside and there was space for them, water and even a litter tray.
Use a litter catching mat next to the tray to prevent it being walked around your van.
Wipe the tray out with surgical spirit to get rid of any smell.
Use a good quality litter.
You need a small crate with you in case you need to go to a vet or take animals out of the van for any reason ( MOT, I had to sit in the waiting room with cats in travel crate and dogs on leads)
Mine didn’t seem bothered by any heat. Windows open with fly screens down when parked up, roof vents open. Outside there was always somewhere shady for them.

The “whisp” presently in Southport waiting for fireworks! Cancelled last night, hoping the weather holds for tonight. He has been coming since 5mths old, when we got him. Now 4 yrs old. He has a harness on and is able to potter out being attached to several elasticated leads, giving a range of about 5 mtrs. He has litter tray in van and one under the van. He is very settled once we stop, he doesn’t really like the journey. He is crated enroute with blanket and litter tray In a small/ medium dog crate. He has managed to get loose a cpl of times, sending us into a state of panic, however, on return of not having found him in his escapades he is sitting on the mat back at the van. He settles and manages for about 10 days. Much longer he does tend to get a bit stir crazy. Whilst in van he is free to move at will.

We do 4 days at a time typically. Two cats that are really close anyway helps.
Elasticated leads and stake in ground. Usually inside an awning or a popup gazebo.
Roof fan DIY for main roof vent if we are at all concerned about heat - quickly vents heat away.
Litter tray usually left in same spot in van.
Bridge built to allow access to over cab area to extend their play area. Little walks and wanders when no dogs around and they seem perfectly happy.
Very important we leave the carry cases and harnesses lying around the house at home and they voluntarily sleep in the travel basket if the mood takes them.

A Motorhome parked close to us in France recently.

Our dog was layed outside in full view.

10 minutes later our dog was diving under the Motorhome in an attempt to annihilate the next doors cat which had hooked it's long lead around our exhaust pipe and was somewhat vulnerable,

If you see a Motorhome with a dog do not park close by.

Our dog hates cats - it's called a natural instinct,

And we have been cat owners ......

?.

The dog instinct is fair enough and we make a point of taking the cats out of view when dogs are around.....
Our only gripe is when places say dogs on leads at all time, and ALL times gets interpreted to, only when walking away from MH, and if there is a bit of a gap in a rally field to let them run loose whenever they feel like it or creating an ad hoc dog run when there is an allocated field (which we purposely park away from out of respect for the conscientious dog owners.

Couldn't resist? What a childish response.
Maybe you need some positivity in your life so you don't feel the need to be so sarcastic and negative all the time...... Good luck to you.

As they haven't responded to the thread I won't mention who it is, but there is a Funster who take a cat everywhere and just let it come and go as it pleases. They like to pitch close to hedges or woodland and the cat is perfectly happy to wander off and return at will. (y)

We now have "house cats" so wouldn't let them roam. Even if I had a more streetwise cat I don't think I could risk letting them wander, but that's just us. ?

We have 2 dogs and had a cat but acquired her when she moved in with us as an adult. We never took her away when we went in the motorhome but had a neighbour look after her as thought she would be unhappy as not used to traveling etc. The dogs are getting on now and I was just wondering in the future whether to get a cat as a kitten which would be trained to a harness and lead and would always have travelled and spent time inside a motorhome from a young ages. I don’t really want to get an animal that would be ignored and left behind several months of the year.

We have had several cats over the years and once they reached adulthood they did seem to spend a lot of their time just curled up sleeping.

Thanks for the information folks

That's cos they have been away from civilization in deep dark forest with no signal :Eeek:
.......but I'm sure they will be along wth comments as soon as they return. (y)

The cat in this travel series , seems to have it well sorted :)

when my sister died, I inherited two lovely little cats, that I passed on to my daughter. One of them, Chloe regularly gets into my car and wants to go for a ride. would make an ideal travel companion. Jerry, not a chance

Well ours have not killed anything except flies..... And the odd fluffy toy mouse.

You are obviously then, a responsible cat owner and a true animal lover, who does not give their predator any free and unsupervised opportunity to pursue its natural instincts, I am sorry if I offended you, as obviously, you must agree with me, intelligently, well cared for pets, create no problems or conflicts..

However, we are all very selective in which animals we find cute, and which animals we think of as not so cute, irrelevant, or vermin. A mouse, a rat, a fly, irrelevant? A family of songbirds, a vole or a baby rabbit relevant??

The fact remains that the overwhelming majority of cat owners are in denial about what their cat gets up to when out of site. They seem to think that a cat has the right to kill anything because it is in their nature!!.

I think I could easily make it my mission in life to reverse this awful besotted ignorance.

Horrible, ignorant people, selfishly indulging their desire to feel like they are in some way responsibly caring for, and parenting one (cute?) creature, to the detriment of so many (not so cute others) others, is ridiculous and a sad reflection on our view and understanding of the real natural world.

They are taken into the countrside in motorhomes and caravans now!
Well, good hunting!

As you can tell, I feel very strongly about the lack of responsible cat ownership.

I tell you this much, If you were to ask any young child who had seen a cat catch and kill another creature in front of them what they thought of domestic cats, you would feel ashamed.

Oh Please! think! they are jekyl and hide creatures and every single 'wild' creature is ever more precious and under threat from us!

We take our cat everywhere with us, it wouldn't be right leaving her in a cattery for two or more months plus we'd miss her.

We normally only let her out wearing a harness and lead, we have in certain locations let her roam.

You might as well condemn all dogs too as the amount of energy , time and CO2 emmissions used up in their food production is colossal.
Or if there were no humans around anymore there would be a huge population of wild cats, ferrets, pole cats and rats etc... Preying on the birds and mice you are so concerned about?

Blah Blah Blah...
Here's an Idea, why not start your own thread about how much you hate cats.

In case you hadn't noticed, this one is about cats in motorhomes..
