At my car’s service on Thursday the report stated they’d recommend changing the air filter and plugs due to its age. The car is 4 years old this week, has done 20k miles. The cost quoted was £155 ( can’t remember if that is with or without VAT) parts guaranteed for 40k miles.
Is this a reasonable cost ?
And if the new ones will do 40k why have mine only lasted 20k ?

Thanks for any advice—- vehicles aren’t my strong point.

You answered your own question before I had chance, did you ask them why your first lot weren't good for 40,000.

Sounds reasonable to me. Sometimes parts have to be changed due to age rather than miles. Cam belts are a good example.

Plugs last way longer than they used to but at 20,000 miles I personally would change them. The air filter is a good idea too.

Do you trust your garage?

We’ve got Citroen C1 that will be four years old and less than 20000miles when it’s due it’s service in May but the service says to change the plugs at four years old, regardless of mileage.

Could you give some more information please Hollyberry ?

Who did the service and what is the make and model of the car?

Strange, the plugs in my RV engine, a Ford 6.8ltr V10, were good for 100,000 miles.

You are being conned into something you don't need.
By all means replace the air filter, it can't do any harm for a few quid.

Personally I’d change the air filter as for the plugs I’d say if they are working ok they are fine.

Out of interest what car is it as at that price I’m guessing the parts are gold plated ?

Price seems steep.

Edit how the feck are they guaranteeing an air filter.
That depends what crap you are driving through.

Also what car is it a bloody Ferrari, seriously what car is it Hollyberry

Why would a metal and porceline spark plug need changing on age?
There is nothing to age degrade.
The electrodes will deteriorate with use but they aren't prone to dissolving when not in use.

I really meant the air filter. I presumed they had inspected the plugs.

I'm with Pappajohn on this one. What could be wrong with those 40000 mile plugs within 20000 miles. Certainly change the air filter, as for the cost, sounds steep to me. Change the filter yourself and job sorted with money in your pocket.

Looks to me like £45...£55 for parts and £100 for 1/2 hr to 1hr Labour, unless of course it’s something exotic!!

changing the air filter is a 5 minute diy job and the filter will cost about £10

In fact it’s a shame your not closer as I’d of done it for you for a couple of ciders ?

I have known spark plugs last 20 years and some 1 year, but modern spark plugs are far better quality

I suppose it depends on the manufacturer warranty.
It may have a 5 or 7 year warranty so whatever the book says must be adhered to regardless of how daft it sounds.
If its our of warranty as others have said, 5 mins to change the filter and ignore the plugs or remove, clean and regap.

It’s a Dacia Stepway. Friend’s son has offered to do the job if I buy the parts. Air filter is less than £18 ( listed as £18 and I’ve got a discount code to out in) It gives 2 options on plugs and I’ve no way of knowing which but it looks as though the consensus is change the filter, leave the plugs. Car starts up first time, drives fine.
Thanks, everyone, for your advice, much appreciated.

You can take your air filter out and check it visually. You might be able to get away with just popping it back, or gently hoovering the paper pleats. OTOH, if you've spent most of the last 4 years driving on dusty unmade roads or across the Sahara it might have needed changing at a month old ;)

Spark plugs should be good for the mileage quoted by the vehicle manufacturer in their service schedule, whatever the amount of time that has elapsed. Volvo states plugs should be changed at 40,000 miles for instance, and although the service grid shows 40,000 miles or 2 years, there is an explanatory note which states to ignore the time schedule and replace on mileage alone.

Didn't stop the dealer telling me they had to change the plugs at my 2nd years service with less than 10K miles on the car. I referred them to their own service schedule and told them they were welcome to change them if they insisted, but I wouldn't be paying for them. Money making exercise!

Id advise using GSF for parts, reserve online and use discount code.
Collect parts and pay on collection.
