On 17th October we are off to Europe full timing, we are going to head for Southern Spain. In December it is my wife,s birthday, so two questions, first do we need to book sites? Second, any suggestions for romantic sites or places?

You need to know what they are like before you book. Some of the sites are not that nice. Don't know who writes the ACSI reviews but some must be written under the influence of a bribe or a very large box of red wine. Do your homework and check trip advisor for reviews. Lots of sites are starting to get busy with the snowbird's turning up. Some of them can be rather noisy especially after a box or two of wine. Last site we were on it was Germans next to us that smoked us out. Neither of us smoke but sitting next to a MH where you had two people chain smoking was just to much. Much prefer wild camping but it's not for everyone.

As for campsites in Southern Spain some of them were constructed 30 years ago and are designed for caravans. We turned up at one and the guy expected us to be able to drive down a narrow path and then turn right. Trees everywhere so we backed out and left. Certainly good fun trying to find somewhere nice. Our ACSI book has far more crosses in it than ticks.

Good advice from QFour, Many are very tight to get into your pitch, low trees ( not that necessary in the Winter) and can be over Social if it's not your thing

Our experience of camping in Spain is that, on the whole, pitches are smaller than in France for example but the facilities are usually much nicer...cleaner, with toilet seats and usually paper and often showers without pushbuttons...but in France the pitches are often palacial and private - surrounded by hedges. Spanish campsites are more expensive than in France, in our experience, but then in Spain food, wine and eating out is much cheaper than in France. We are off to southern Spain, using the tunnel, on October 15th until the end of February...through France on the west side as there are more campsites open and the weather is a tad more reliable...in our experience....we are avoiding the Med. coast going down through Portugal (a new experience) and along the Algarve to Spain to stay on the Atlantic coast. We will not be booking. We may come across each other at some point:) ... which would be lovely....enjoy your trip. I've sent off for my Funster sticker:D

Never leave a campsite with your clothes line tied to a lamp post.
Advice from others will be subjective and unlikely to exactly fit your requirements. Just go and discover your own Spain, surely that's the fun of motor homing.......

Hi, I can't recommend a romantic campsite but in southern Spain there are campsites (which are open in the winter), listed in ACSI, with easy public transport to cities like Granada, Rhonda, Valencia etc., all these cities have great restaurants and bars and fantastic heritage sites and architecture. Another added bonus is that the cities are less busy than at other times of the year.
Whilst some of the ACSI reviews may be a bit far fetched, in my experience, especially if there are quite a few, they tend to be reasonably close to the mark. However, you do need to be clear what you're looking for on a site. If you don't want kids entertainment then it doesn't matter if that element has a low score.
I'm sure you'll have a great trip. We're heading south in November so may well pass you.
