Just been told on renewal that any motorhome with a value over £50,000 requires that a tracker be fitted.

£400 plus £150 a year there after.

So how much is my 2016 IH Motorhome RL and 6.35mtrs 150bhp manual worth and how can I get round this?

If close to £50K and you are happy with existing cover otherwise tell them £49,500 current value (y)

Out of interest what would it cost to replace like for like?

I think this £50K trigger point needs upping we had the same issue 6 years ago, I took a risk and drove around with no theft cover for 12 months, although hoping they would pay £50K if the worst had happened we were fully insured other than theft

Does the tracker have to be Thatchem approved.

Comfort require an alarm or tracker over £50k but over £75k a tracker.
I insured my Hymer for £74,500 to avoid a tracker, about what it cost me with the extras I put on I would have been stuffed if I'd bought in the UK as it would have cost £95k. :)

NFU don't require trackers or alarms but charge about £530 regardless of the value of the van a bit expensive unless you have a high value van.

I did not ask as there is no way I am fitting a tracker to the motorhome. We just sourced insurance elsewhere.

They will have an approved list of trackers that would be required and almost certainly it will have to be professionally installed, Thatcham approved and with the relevant paperwork.

So far as under valuing the motorhome they might say that you took part of the risk yourself and under pay by that percentage.

More lightly in my opinion would be a refund of the premium and say you lied on the proposal so the insurance is void.

There are at best in my opinion barely honest about how any insurance company operates.

I know that is what it cost to you but would assume that they would work on UK prices & consider in the event of a claim that the vehicle is 20k under valued as they'd be paying out at UK rates?

As long as they pay up the value I'm insured for I'm happy. I've insured 3 vans with then they have only ever asked what value I wanted to insure for. If they had asked for the UK list price that would be a different matter.
All I have done is insure it for the value I paid for it.

NFU wouldn’t insure as over 6m and over 3.5t. I bought the Frankia in Dec and went to Vanbitz to get the Strikeback Growler with the Metatrac tracker fitted as I had with the previous two vans. Now MetaTrak isn’t Thatchem approved but in my infinite wisdom decided to stick with it as Safeguard would insure with that setup. Had I know that Vanbitz did have a Thatchem approved tracker I would probably have gone with the full monty just to give me a bigger range of insurers. Looks like Safeguard again unless I want to install another tracker.

@Cairngorm I have just insured our yet to be delivered Frankia with NFU over 6 metres and 4500kg with no issue at all, their policy cover is excellent and their premium was exceptional. Feel free to contact if you would like more details.

That seems really strange, as I tried the local NFU and then called the Salisbury NFU and they referred me back to Inverness as they said they all use the same system. Post code lottery perhaps. Seems little point in trying somewhere else with the NFU.
