I have bought my brothers campervan but.it is in rushden Kettering area has no mot or tax what in your opinion is the best way to get it delivered to Devon M/B sprinter lwb. Not Parcelforce tia

Recovery trucks are not as expensive as you would think if booked in advance

Either get it MOT'd and taxed insured etc.ant drive it home, or find a delivery company but that will be expensive.
I'm not sure if it is allowed in lockdown

You cannot tax it without an MOT, BUT you are allowed to book an MOT anywhere in the country and drive to the MOT test.
Spot on and to a place of repair just make sure it’s booked in prior to driving. (Home can also be a place of repair).

I had thought of that but travelling up there by train is expensive and takes hours as no direct route plus lack of movement (lockdown) thanks

Ask your friends if they know anybody with a car transporter trailer. Bribe the owner and go collect it. Of search for trailer delivery boat transfer and alike. Good luck 🤞

If you try to drive it home without an MOT you will have no breakdown cover if it doesn' make it.can your brother get it MOT'd for you?

Yes he is trying to but cannot leave the house for to long as is a carer for two people the garage he usually uses are having problems at the moment plus for me to get there means train to London then train to Bedford then bus to my brothers house .cheers

I presume you are in no hurry to get it delivered to Devon until after this lockdown?

Given the current lockdown, I'd suggest that you can't go to pick it up. Far too far for it to be considered local or essential. Similarly whilst the MOT regs might not be that precise, driving halfway across the country to get a pre-booked MOT local to you can't be right, especially if technically the vehicle might not be roadworthy (which you won't find out until the MOT test). I think your insurer's would also have a bit of concern.

It's either find some way to get the MOT done locally to where the van is, (the van must be insured to be driven to the local garage), perhaps some friend can drive it? At least it can then be taxed and driven legally. Would the journey to you , or for you to go and collect it be essential under the current rules). If you are desperate to get hold of it, paying for transportation may be the only option.

I would think this Sprinter if fitted out weighs over three tons, to carry it LEGALLY you would probably need a 12 or 16 ton truck. Not John in a Transit!
£500.00 upwards probably.

Although it will cost, I'd suggest the only legitimate way to get the van is to use a recovery/haulage company. They are considered an essential service and allowed to continue to operate during the lockdown.

Obviously, you could wait until after lockdown, but it might be a while... (though nowhere to use the van beforehand).

Our van got trapped at Alicante, Spain in the first lockdown and we had it transported back to Bristol.

We used S G Haulage of Lincoln - they were excellent, but you may well find cheaper for a UK job?

You may be able to negotiate a good deal as the recovery guys may not be that busy during lockdown. Ideally it would help if you could find a return load for them, how about all those large and expensive christmas presents you bought for your dear brother.

Is there a storage issue if not just wait until lockdown is over then organise it.

  • The law makes no mention as to how far you can go for an MOT but would suggest the distance is kept as short as possible because even though you are exempt from having a valid MOT certificate in the circumstances described above, if you are stopped by the police you could still be prosecuted for any defective parts on your vehicle e.g. exhaust, brakes and tyres etc. If you call in at shops etc. on your way to the MOT, it may be held that you are using the vehicle for other purposes and the above exemption won't apply. The further you travel the more likelihood there is of your vehicle triggering an ANPR camera and you being stopped.
  • You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.
  • It's a big grey area in my view, as if stopped and a dangerous defect is discovered you still the person responsible behind the wheel, furthermore your insurance may take a view should the unlikely event of an accident ensue.

Have a word with John Brown 4x4
https://www.johnbrown4x4.com/
They build and deliver classic Landrovers.

They are based in Yorkshire and do regular delivery runs to the West Country.

My brother has a classic Landie, they delivered from Yorkshire to Cornwall, and then at a later date picked it up in Cornwall and delivered to Oxfordshire

You may have to wait for a suitable run, so they can pick it up as a return trip, but the West Country seems to be a weekly run for them.

Not sure of the cost, but it was not as much as you think.

Just been quoted 1200 plus vat as a one as unable to work it with another job

That sounds a bit steep. I paid £1700 to transport a new van, fully insured, from Munich last June inclusive of tax. It was part of a larger shipment however on a car transporter.

I suggest Shipley I had a quote from them to transport a yacht from Spain, and it was quite reasonable price, as the transporter made a delivery to Spain
From memory it was about 500 pounds

You cannot tax it without an MOT, BUT you are allowed to book an MOT anywhere in the country and drive to the MOT test.
I would check that out as I believe from memory you have to book an MOT if it's not taxed to the nearest MOT Station that is capable of carrying out MOT on that particular vehicle

From .gov.uk
You cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught.
The only exceptions are to drive it:

  • to or from somewhere to be repaired
  • to a pre-arranged MOT test
