I have seen on FB that Calor will announce today the ending of bottles smaller than 6/7Kg.

I googled it and haven't seen an article to support this but thought it would be of interest to discuss here?

Would surprise me with the popularity of the 907 bottles. Smaller the bottle the more the gas costs, so assume their profits are better on the smaller stuff too.

I would have thought it would not affect Motorhomers as anything less than 6kg would not be worth having?

I thought similar but have seen a few used as backups or with BBQ etc as obviously easier to lift and move if you aren't as strong as you used to be etc... Still got a 3.9Kg in the garage at home I bought when bottles were in short supply.

Would imagine that plumbers will be pissed off if they are having to lug about either a 7kg butane or a 13kg propane cylinder about to do pipework rather that the 4.5kg and 3.9kg flavours.

I wouldn’t be surprised given the scarcity of the 3.9kg propane cylinders in recent times. We have an account at the Exeter distribution depot and they’ve had almost zero availability of that size for the past three months. They finally managed to locate one for me only this week - I owed a refill to a neighbour - and I went in to collect it. I was surprised at how few of any size cylinders they had in the yard, with hardly any 6kg and my sole 3.9kg looking very lonely!

I think they stopped selling new 6kg ones a couple of years ago you can exchange them but you can't get a new one. They are the most popular size for caravans, doesn't affect Motorhomes so much as most of us use 11, 13 & 14kg bottles.

From what I have seen, most PVC's that use cylinders use 6kg cylinders.

perhaps that's why they are in short supply, how many others have done that and now the bottles have been taken out of circulation sitting in peoples garages and sheds unused and not needed

I think you may be right with rear lounge PVC’s, but having the fixed bed in ours gives us more height for the gas storage locker, hence easily able to fit two 11kgs. 👍

The rear lounge vans we looked at had the smaller gas lockers anyway.🤷‍♂️

I think most boats and a lot of trades use the small cylinders I can't see them stopping them altogether.

This was sent to me yesterday..

Just wanted to provide some communication relating to a specific retail sizes cylinders that some of your industry members may currently purchase from Calor.

Calor Retail Stockists will receive individual communication on this as the letters are due to hit later this week.

Changes to our cylinder range

From 1st February 2023 the following cylinders will be discontinued: Cube, 3.9kg Propane, 4.5kg Butane, 6Lite Propane and 12kg Butane cylinders.

Why have we done this?

Improving our cylinder service is a priority. Our existing range of cylinders is creating complexity within our supply chain. This means longer change over times and reduced filling capacity on high volume key sizes. That’s why we’ve taken the difficult decision to reduce our cylinder range, simplifying the business.

We realise this change will affect customers that rely on these sizes, but we know these changes are necessary to significantly improve our cylinder service.

Suitable Alternatives

There are suitable alternatives to these cylinder sizes within our range, or within the Campingaz range. For example, customers looking for a 3.9kg Propane can be offered a 6kg Propane, and those looking for a 4.5kg Butane offered a 7kg Butane.

For more information on suitable alternatives and safely changing the regulator, visit www.calor.co.uk/cylinder-range-faq

I keep a 3.9 in the locker to incase I cant refill the gaslow

Full Clarkson mode..I hate the company Calor on a molecular level. They are an awful disreputable outfit who don't deserve customers, their directors should be paraded through the streets naked while kids throw excrement at them, shouting 'Shame'

Plumbers don’t use them any more

That is Jim #cancelled

I was a calor agent/stockist for 40 years and there treatment of us was terrible over treatment of returned bottles and price rises so this so this discontinuation does not suprise me stocks of 3.9 and 4.5 kg have been low and not increased since 6 and 7 kgs came out.

a lot of motorhomes pre 2007 can only carry 2x6kg, even the 11kg refillable ones without the big top collar wont fit...if it was only designed for one bottle the cupboard tends to be higher and you can just get away with it

I seem to remember hearing that some campsite and the C&CC / C&MC rallies etc won't allow people to stand the larger bottles outside the caravan storage compartment..

Well my neighbour is now quite pleased that the 3.9kg has been discontinued. With the scarcity of the smaller jobs he’s been trying to get his two swapped over for 6kg ones for some time with no interest shown by retailers. Now that Calor will do it themselves he’s got a result. (y)

many years ago I spent what was for me at the time a lot of money on a Primus hand held blow lamp torch ..brilliant torch with two burners and very versatile.. it used what they called a Primus 2000 cylinder..think they were marketed by sievert... a few years ago around the start of lockdown I was told by my usual supplier they were no longer available...and was offered a similar quality torch that used the disposable type cylinders and the mapp gas cylinders..

wasn't best pleased but I was in the fortunate position of been able to machine up an adapter that would allow me to continue to use my existing torch with the disposable cylinders... eventually I rigged up a fill adapter that allowed me to refill my own Primus 2000 cylinder from my guess what???? ....my 3.9kg propane cylinder that I used in the gas locker of the transit camper I converted.... I kept one 3.9kg cylinder when I sold it to run a garage heater... whoever has that now is going to be faced with a bit of a problem cause the gas locker was a steel box made to measure and hold two 3.9kg propane cylinders....

it is a fact that nothing is forever, and you just have to adapt and move along with things you can do nothing about....even if they are annoying and make you mad..(y)
I wonder if the exchange from a 3.9kg cylinder to a 6kg one will be free of any additional payment when the time comes:unsure:
Andy

Or buying bottles in France as they have small sizes and far better costs.

Have a look at clause 8 on the Calor Information. As they’re wiling to make a refund if requested (although you’ll have to no doubt find the original rental agreement and good luck with that!), it does maybe indicate that they’re likely to make the exchange F.O.C. It would save them money compared to a refund, secure your custom, and they’ll likely sell more gas as a result.

But then again it’s Calor we’re talking about, so all bets are off!
