Arriving in Caen in late December at 9.30pm, can anyone recommend anywhere to stay local overnight before heading South.

Hermanville sur mer , about 5km from
Caen Port is where we stop. It’s handy, free and quiet .

The ferry terminal is Ouistreham there is an Aire right next to the port - - and there is a site that is probably closed about half mile from the port

Villers-Bocage now has a lovely new Aire at bottom of town €4 Very quiet and handy for shop and fuel.

You need to be aware of THIS
We came back a couple of weeks ago. The port is still the same. Not as many trying their luck. But enough.
That’s why we use villers bocage it’s only 30 minutes out so even with late crossing you can relax and get a good nights sleep

Just been online and changed our ferry to the overnight Portsmouth to Cherbourg route which docks at 8am

I understand the logic. The downside is that from Cherbourg you have a lot further to drive, down what is one of the most boring bits of France.

Is there a boring bit in France? We haven't found it yet.

It’s only another 20 mile so I can deal with that😀

Abssolutely no-one suspicious in or around the port area of Saint Malo when I was there a fortnight ago. Several vans parked up next door to the easily acessed check in area. The immigration/police guy did a quick once over on the van inside and out before letting me through though

The Cherbourg peninsula is really pretty and it’s a very easy drive. When it’s running we love the Poole Cherbourg crossing as Poole is only an hour from us.
