C1 Renewal Confusion

I'm 73 and presently hold a C1 licence to drive my 3.8t Hymer. The licence expired 10/10/2020 and the 11 month extension DVLA applied ends 10/9/2021

I just got the D2/D4 forms and I'm starting the renewal process -- but I'm now really confused by a statement in the D2 notes that says if you are 65 or over you need a D4 every year. I'd be assuming that I'd get a 3-year licence if medical OK.

The DVLA "Driving a Motorhome" web page doesn't say anything about this, my confusion comes from the bit in the D2 notes that says D4 needed ".. if ANY of the following ..."

Can anyone help clarify?

I'm going to follow this as my wife has had to renew her licence as it's 10 years old and the new one hasn't got C1 on it as she'll be 70 in September.

You should get a 3 year licence if medical ok. However, whilst waiting I dont know if you get the Section 88 extension on top of your original extension.

Good morning Annie, what is a Section 88 extension? John

Section 88 is where DVLA have your application and is being processed while your current licence has run out.
Under sect 88 you can continue as if you license still is valid, until renewed or refused

A normal C1 is every 3 years from 70.
Unless you have particular medical circumstances that may dictate otherwise
I'm hoping so ... my confusion comes from the bit at the top that says D4 needed ".. if ANY of the following ..."

On my D2 the Section B notes were about proof of identity not about the D4 report.

That only applies if you are renewing a C licence (full HGV), not a C1 (up to 7500kg).

The image in my opening post is from the D2 form received from DVLA last week ... proof of identity is Section C, immediately below the Section B notes as posted.

Except if you wish to drive abroad I believe.
To go abroad you need the up to date photo card license.

To the OP, a warning!
My C1 renewal has been almost 10 weeks so far and I haven’t heard a thing.
Best get a move on with your renewal application.
Best of luck!

Richard.

Only for up to 12 months though - which was relevant for my husband as they took so long we were a couple of weeks away from the 12 months before we got MP involved.
… and yes can only use Section 88 if driving in UK.
In fact I suppose as your licence has already run out it is not valid in EU even if UK has allowed a covid extension?

Like in most things we only really see posts from people having a bad experience. I posted my licence renewal off last Thursday the 15th and received my new licence yesterday. Dropped my C but kept my C1 entitlement. 9 day turnaround seems ok to me.

That would suit me fine .. to be honest it's not an initial delay (as long as it's not very long) that concerns me, it's what - on the basis of those D2 Section B Notes - looks like an annual renewal requirement rather than 3 years, that's my concern.

But, are you over 70 and dit it include a medical form.
If so that is brilliant.

I seem to remember the C1 entitlement is for 3 years but C is annual post 65.

I’m afraid the DVLA information about license renewal is about as clear as mud if you happen to be the driver of a 3.5t+ motorhome and are over 70.

No, not over 70. I’m 60 but I have no intention of truck driving any more so dropped my C which negated the need for a medical. I did send a new photo but it cost nothing for my new licence. C1 lasts me for nearly 10 years now.

Hello Peter, well I hope you are right .. but I can't see anything that indicates that. John
Well put it this way, I renewed my C1 licence when I got to 70 with a D2 and D4 and got the licence back with 3 years on it. I have not submitted medical forms yearly since then. However, I had to renew my C1 as I am 73 this year, and I did so by submitting a new D2 and D4 again and I got my licence back with another 3 years on it.

There is something not right about the bit of the form you have shown in #1. Can you show us the rest of the form please.

Don't have an A3 scanner ... following the form you posted earlier I checked my D2 and sent for another set from DVLA to make sure. The new set, received last week, are exactly as I showed in #1.

Both forms have a document code at the bottom of the first page D2-0321 which I had guessed could be "D2 March 2021 version" .. the form you have provided has a different code, D2-0511 .... which doesn't seem to fit.
