I am looking to order some shock absorbers from Germany that in its self is easy but the company says I will be responsible for on top for all taxes and customs duties,
The cost of parts and shipping is total £920 how much extra will I have on top for tax and duties?

It has become much harder and costlier to import from Europe now.
It could get easier in the future as the dust settles on Covid and Brexit.
I would try and find a UK supplier or make for now

Probably cheaper to go and collect them.

Hi Steve
I am doing the same but buying from Slovenia, wanted a rough guide as to what additional costs would be, Found a link to this calculator below.

Be aware that customs agents fees (the people who do the paperwork) are high, I was quoted ¨at least 30%¨ on top of the price of the goods when trying to buy from UK earlier this year - which meant that instead of paying 150-200 GBP pre-brexit to import 900 GBP worth of wall panels, it was going to be between 800-900 GBP post-Brexit, which made it a non-starter. I´ve no doubt that EU customs agents fees are similar.

I have manufactured and import AV equipment mainly from the US, to give you a approx/close guide to charges incurred i usually use these figures (YOURS)

£920.00 x 1.05% ( eori, deferment & handling fees) in other words customs duties = £966.00

then add the vat, 20% = £1159.20 and you won't be far away

As I say these are the figures I work with and they are usually pretty close once i've had all the correct invoicing come through from shippers and handlers

hope you helps you

Keep me informed on the out come when fitted please our Iveco is like a ship in distress on rough ground with the standard shocks

I tried to order some motorcycle and MH items from Germany. Neither company could tell me what the final cost ‘to me’ would be. So I didn’t bother. 🤷‍♂️

Marquart are supplying ex vat, so I'm expecting to pay UK Vat plus a handling charge, from previous experience these tend to be about £25. So not much more than collecting it.

I ve bought stuff from US and yes its a lot more because we have no trading agreement with them on parts.

Under the current reg if the items are under £130 the supplier has to register with HMRC at a cost of £1000 & collect the UK VAT & Duty for our government, above £130 it is up to the imported to pay VAT & Duty.
Agents used to charge around £25 but since January they appear to be using it as a licence to print money.
Anyone importing goods needs to find out which agent is being used & the cost or you could be in for a nasty shock.

I will let you know next week, it does seem to be a bit of a lottery atm, have experienced some firms who won't ship but think that supply and demand will ultimately sort it out

AFAICS buying stuff from America is the same pain it always has been
The Europe situation is more difficult than it was but easier than the US. I think it will improve further because the market will see that it does. I used to run a courier business pre EU and there were steps made then to make the paperwork easier (SAD) and it was OK if you had your paperwork straight and I think it will be easier now because as in more and more processes within transport the paperwork is online and payments are pretty much instant. I paid for my shocks yesterday at 0800 via Revolut and the shipping email was in my box at 1050.

I tried to order a spare wheel carrier from Iglhaut in Germany in march.
Was quoted on a 995 euro part, delivery 100 euro, export charges 610 euro.
In the end purchased a different carrier from Europe via 4x4 works nr Cambridge. Whom arranged export by the pallet which reduced costs, I paid no export taxes.
Not sure what shocks you need but it may be worth a try with them.
Only downside is long delivery times, waiting for them to purchase enough items in one load.
Found them to be very helpful.

Personally speaking , i prefer to source as much as possible from within the UK , issue resolution is often far easier . However , i've just ordered a complete nearside mirror for my Hymer , from Germany . Now i'll be honest , it's through Brownhills , but i can say the price has jumped , by nearly 150 quid , though delivery lead time has dropped . Brownhills are saying about 4-5 weeks , instead of 6 i had for the offside a couple of years ago .

I've not ordered anything from the Eu lately , but then with the exception of last year , i never did . I think it will settle down eventually , but i will add , i've discovered recently gear can be delivered from China quicker , and i kid you not . Longest wait has been 4 weeks , but recently i needed a washer jet for the windscreen . Not being able to source one here , i ordered 4 new ones to replace them all . They were meant to be in China , but i struggle to believe this , they arrived a week ago and are now fitted , just 2 weeks after i ordered them . And the 4 together , cost less than a quarter of one original German part , i later found one listed on ebay yesterday .

The chinese have a system here whereby the stuff you order is shipped internally in china to a central centre, & flown in to Madrid where they have other giant distribution centres. They are then despatched by post from there. I only know this as we have stuff continually & if the wife buys from 10 different suppliers they will arrive usually in 2 addressed jiffy bags which ,when opened, have 5 individually addressed jiffy bags in each of them.
Also if you trawl suppliers you can come across some who have stock held in an eu country which means the 2 weeks the above usually takes comes down to a few days.

Yes Gus , i have come across and ordered from them as well . I've being doing a lot of work on the van during the pandemic , repair and refinishing the front bumper is but one of many . The original had a mesh , body fillered in place , which got wrecked during removal . This made replacement mandatory , so i needed to source a large chunk of mesh to fill the hole . If i recall around 4ft , most adds were too small at a metre . Just to add to the pain , i wanted black , as i felt chrome would look outta place , that's why i brought a black A frame nudge bar . Eventually i sourced one from just such a place , stock held in this country . I always check country stock is held , but even so i'm really careful what i order from China anyway .

I have ordered a vehicle part without realising the seller was in Germany. The receipt I have from them includes postage and VAT so am I right in thinking there’s nothing more to pay.
The price including postage was the one of the cheapest I could find and have used before. The total price was £13.

You won't know for sure until it arrives or even after sometimes. I think there is a lower limit at about £130 but hasn't stopped some taking the mick with 'processing charges'

Yes mate , i'm the same . I go there only after i've exhausted all other avenues . The parts usually cost no more than a fiver , though i will admit , i have gone as high as 10 , with one item . Never anything electrical , or mechanical , they won't last .

The fact is , i have a brand new Chinese motorbike , and though it is reasonable well made , the parts used , to be perfectly frank are poor quality . It's not fully run in yet , despite being three years old , and actually right now , off the road . I can't get the dam thing outta the garage , so it missed it's first mot and is currently sorn'd . There's a three and a half ton brick in the way . The only reason i brought it , is because it's a copy of a 70's Honda , for which parts are still available . I threw the warranty in the bin after i got it home , it's not worth the paper it's printed on , and i've replaced a number of bolts already . I've also replaced the plug cap which annoyingly kept falling off , stalling the engine , and reworked the throttle , due to play in the twist grip . Tyres , and chain will be next , but in all honesty , i doubt that will be till next year now .

Yes mate , me too . Twice , once from France , so i have ordered from Eu , and no , i didn't pay any extra . I'd have being pretty hacked off if i did , but to be honest i'd forgotten about it . I can't even remember what it was , it was the delayed delivery date that made me check . The other was China , last year , both were low value items .

To be honest , i've ordered so much for the van , other the last two years , i'd forgotten . It must be getting close on 2 and a half grand by now , with the mirror .
