Hi peeps,
George in Sussex, brake light switch will not fit in to space at brake pedal properly. Mobile electrician has kindly gone quiet, so that i sent him a text 6 days after his last visit. Ducato bessacarr E435 , 2.8ltr, 2004 plate, stuck in layby until fixed . Any suggestions would be much appreciated, cheers in advance, G .

Why are you stuck? If its a switch fault...move on until you get to a decent garage who knows what they are on about!

Both my brake light bulbs went on a combo van years ago. I found out on the motorway when a car locked up behind me when I'd been braking for like 10 seconds ? To get home I put the fog lights on every time I braked.

Not sure, but the switch might be a bayonet fitting. Insert and twist to lock it in position.
Its about 5 years since I had a 2005 boxer van, but thats how i remember the brake pedal switch.

On the daughters VW Polo when the brake light switch failed.

Although you had an engine stop light on the dash you could still drive it and everything worked fine except you had no rear brake lights.

Drive to a decent repair garage and get it fixed.

The parts and labour should not be expensive. It only took me about 15minutes to fix it.

Well....the switch will not fit back into the space where it lives. Evidence of cutting down of plastic on switch to get it to fit - previous owner. Also electrician put bypass cable in to obviate loss of voltage at switch ...then he disappeared when saying he will source a new switch! Sorry , shoulda said....can I get a generic switch type instead - one which is small enough to fit? Switch has been contacting a bar at side - the reason why it's not working.

sounds like someone has bodged a temporary (incorrect) switch in there to make do... which has now failed.. I would start by identifying the correct part that "should be" fitted there first

A Fiat Ducato brake light switch is only about £15 - fit the correct part

It looks like you are suffering from a previous bodge.

On my 2003 Boxer the brake light switch broke, so I was able to remove it easily. The (proper) replacement was impossible to fit, so I used a crowbar to bend aside (very gently and very minimally) the interfering steel framework so it would fit. I couldn't see any other way to do so without starting to remove pedals, etc., which didn't seem worth the effort.
