We are hoping to buy some boxed wine in the Cite Europe Area and Spain when we travel in September, we are a little tight on weight so boxes are better for us than bottles.

Please can anyone recommend a red wine we can buy at either place and where we could buy it?

Many thanks

Wet not red wine connoisseurs, but we always buy. 5 litre box of Vieux Papes at Carrefour at Cite de Europe & usually pay just under 13 euros, we also quite like Heritage sauvignon from the same place around 12.5 euros for 5 litres

I’m with that too.

Only rose I like is cotes de Provence.

For other reds, I like Bordeaux or Gamy, Pinot noirs.

There are a lot of wineries you may pass on your travels that sell BIB

When we were in Calais in June Auchan in Coquelles had 3ltr boxes of South African Pinotage and Australian Chardonnay for 7Euro. May be worth a look if you have time.

All the supermarkets sell boxed wine these days. Cheapest is probably Lidl/Aldi but choice is limited. If you pay around €12 - €15 for a 3 litre box it should be drinkable. There is also wine in bags, often 1.5 litre sized. You can get the "bricks" at around €1 a litre but they are a bit thin although the red is improved if well chilled. :)

Enjoy the research. :)

Didn't need to know about your bowel movement. ? ;)

Is wine at Cite Europe really any cheaper then buying at any supermarket as you travel through France? Serious question.
No, it's just your usual Carrefour, albeit a big one. But it's the first supermarket most people see, so why not buy something to get you started while you're there?

Only the dregs sold in boxes!

We bought a litre of wine in Portugal in a carton it was very cheap and tasted like you shouldn't be drinking it.. Like a chemical or something, next day my bowel had a clear out

That is incorrect, I would challenge anyone to tell the difference with a blind taste test, the same wine out of glass or a winebox. It's a very good way of buying wine in large quantities.

Back to topic....

Ventoux in boxes about the only cheap drinkable French red wine. (just)

The rest in boxes (and a lot of bottles too) is like drinking battery acid.

The key word here is cheap. (all based on my extensive taste testing over the years)

Probably rather more information than the OP required. :giggle:

Yes but I have bought some at under €10 for 5 litre and over €20 for a bottle and no discernable difference. Its an individual choice.. Lidl marginally dearer and like here, not sure whether it's in stock regularly.

We always get one box of Ventoux from Cite Europe on way out, bottles after that wherever we happen to be, then stock up with Ventoux last thing on the way back.

Your last sentence is correct.

Why not buy one box on the way out then get the same on the way back if you like it. All to easy to get a few then find after the first ita a chore not a pleasure. I think the Auchan supermarket near Cite Europe had a few to choose from.

We often buy wine at Carrefour in Cite Europe.
They have a huge choice of boxes but for reliable, drinkable red we usually go for JP. Chenet merlot or cabernet.
We have bought some that looked good and poured it down the sink, so now stick to known and reliable brands.

Roche Mazet Cabernet Sauvignon. Gallo Cabernet Sauvignon slightly better in our opinion but it is not French and thus most French supermarkets away from Calais don't stock it.

In my extensive and intensive dedicated research over many years I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a bad wine; it is just that some are better than others ........................

The only exception to that rule is Retsina, which is only fit for putting in engines ...........

The lady owner of one of our local bodegas in Spain told us that the wine is bottled up to their bottling limit and then the rest can be put into boxes. The same wine CAN be bought in bottles at her shop!

5 litres of very drinkable red wine is around €8 (y)

Found some very good wine in small wine shops in France in stainless Steel vats they let you have a taste and will then do a 5 or 10 ltr box so don’t over stock in Calais

We brought back a stack of red wine in boxes earlier this year from Spain, good stuff for everyday. Bought from the co-op bodega at €3.99 for 5L.
Will probably bring back another 20-30 boxes next trip.(Yes I know we drink too much)
Plenty of good stuff in French supermarkets though obviously more expensive, and occasionally some Spanish in boxes at Cite Europe Carrefour.
Range very limited at Lidl but now and then some real bargains in better stuff in bottles.

What we used to do is "sample" during our over winter in Spain, then stock up just before leaving, (Rioja, in my case) then add a few on the trip home if we found a drinkable one. Calculated the capacity under the "Rack and Roll" bed/setee in the R-V was good for the rest of the summer and Autumn!.:wine::wine::wine:

BTW, We are finding the Chilean Merlot`s from Aldi and Tesco are probably best value at present if that is your tipple. Worth a "punt" at just over £4 a bottle. (yea; I know, not as cheap as Euorpe, But we cannot get there anyway. NO travel insurance)
