Has anyone compared the weight of a box of wine to a bottle, what is the most weight efficient.

What do you take away with you bottles or boxes!

DOnt take any away with me as I bring it all back from France.
If you buy a box of wine you save the weight of the bottle as the box it comes in is likely to be a similar weight the box that carries 6 bottles is.
You can buy wine for 2 euros a bottle in Lidls or Auchan bargain basement area but you can also buy decent wine straight from the vineyard at 13 ish euros for 5 litres (6 ish bottles) so not only is there an efficiency comparison but there is also a quality one.

Wine I like is not usually in boxes. That said some decent boxes of wine are available and I buy some for barbecue quaffing. One bottle is roughly 1 kilo inc the glass. Weight wise boxes of wine are more efficient.

We‘ve used various wine boxes for decent drinkable wine. Great for saving space as well as weight. Biggest problem is that you can’t tell how much you’ve drunk until it’s normally too late!
We have a ½ Lt carafe in the van for that reason.

We saw a French man utisling a old bottle which he filled up from a box, great idea which ensures he only drank with his missus 1 bottle a night.

I always assumed that visiting a vineyard in France, even paying to Join French Passion was to fill up your 100 plus ltr Fresh Water Tanks before returning home. Straight through customs no questions asked.:giggle:
Some are obviously missing an opportunity.;)

Being serious though, boxes are lighter but we find bottles fit better in the fridge.

In Tesco we spotted a red and white wine in plastic flat bottles, like a hip flask but full size. Best bit is you can fit two in the wine cooler!!

Completely agree. We're off over the water this afternoon and we aren't taking any wine. Why bring coals to Newcastle?

Super U used to do a drinkable Villages Rhone in a 3l box, but we've snobbed up to Cru now and go for Vacqueyras, Lirac, Beaumes de Venise or Gigondas.

A 3l box of white or rose fits in the fridge door for swmbo. I only drink red.
We don't take any away, only bring it back. Boxes are lighter but we also bring good stuff back from our favourite vineyard, which is only in bottles.

That’s what we do.

For research purposes only......I've discovered that two cases of wine (12 bottles) weigh 15kg whereas three boxes of wine (equiv to 12 bottles) weighs about 7 kg.

Buying wine French style!!!!
At the market at Catelnaudery; isn't obvious from the picture but White Van Man has three casks of wine each with a large hose and nozzle to pour it into your own container!

Brought back 5 x 5 litre boxes of Merlot from France in May, cost 9€ EACH 😳
And yes, it really is extremely drinkable !!
5 gallons for £40 👍👍
