Many years ago I used to drive over from Hay on Wye into Wales via Llanthony Priory. As I recall, it was a nice scenic drive. However, I was in a car and the details are hazy. Has anyone been over in a motorhome recently? Verdict?

There is NO way I’d drive that in a motorhome. It’s tight enough on a motorbike.

Hell no!
Putting aside the narrow lanes, lack of passing spaces big enough, tractors going about their business, townies who panic at the thought of using reverse gear...You might struggle with some of the corners now with overgrown verges..or even just the straight bits!!

Went down there last year in a PVC and it was tight with a few extra scratches on the windows. Dont even try with a bigger vehicle.

I think you would be very unpopular.

There are a couple of campsites at Llanthony Priory, one just a simple field run by the owners of the hotel at the priory. There were a couple of VW type camper there when we did that run in our MG midget. We debated whether we could get the ducato there as it is a lovely spot, but have not yet had the courage.

Might have to come at them from behind, so to speak😁

The Gower and Pembroke coast are beautiful places to travel. Try out the many CLs in (certified locations) the area. Need to be a CAMC member though.

That's possibly the way we were driving having started at Severn Bridge but we were following a tulip diagram route so cannot now work out exactly where we went.

There is a great cl right in hay on wye if you want to go back to that area and it's a nice little town to have a browse or maybe Brecon several sites and cls.
A really great visit in that general area is the big pit - museums of wales but not sure if/how they might be operating currently.

Not so much of a miracle as you think. The locals tell me they nearly always have hot sunny summers.
Phil
Just my joke. I lived in Swansea for three years and discovered that there are, basically, two seasons. October to April, rain....mostly horizontal, then sunny, with a particular peak during exams in June!

WHen i was but a lad used this route regularly with a cycle club always at the back, wait for the front men to die or frighten the xxxx out of oncoming traffic. yes tight/fun on an motorbike no problem in the Bongo but there is no way the wife would attempt it in the Rapido. The site at the Priory only allowed small campervans into the field (access difficulties).
Need to get to the top to see Lord Herefords Knob
The route was included in the program 5 go Motorhoming

When there was more military low flying in south Wales, both RAF and USAF sitting on Lord Herefod's Knob, the Twmpa, was the poor mans Mach Loop.

You could sit at the Twmpa and watch the aircraft come up from Hay on Wye, along the face of Hay Bluff and sharp left through the Gospel Pass into the Llantony Valley.

Some years back a Warthog;

Failed to make the turn and hit the hill above Capel-y-ffin, I believe that the pilot ejected safely.

As to the original question.

Yes they took thee vans through on the TV programme but I would bet lots that they had a fore runner either sweeping the road or closing it.

I have driven the route from Llantony Abbey to the Gospel Pass many times in a VW van, last year I considered driving it in my present van, seven metres, but decided to do a recce run in the car first.

I didn't return.
