Hi Funsters,
title says it all really.
Looking for a VPN I can use to listen to Radio 4 in Spain and France over wifi or mobile data.

Life without R4 is too horrible to contemplate.

I will of course take lots of podcasts.

Have used the search which was great but I know the BBC can be very particular with respect to VPN's

Thank you.

Don't think you need a VPN to listen to Radio 4 in Europe on local internet unless things have changed recently.

I listen to BBC radio stations in France and Spain with BBC iPlayer Radio app without VPN. It is only TV you need a VPN and for this I use Nord VPN which I find very good to use as it gives you choice for hundreds of their servers and as BBC getting wise and blocking VPN servers it allows you to choose another UK server which they haven’t blocked.

I have Radio player free download on phone and tablet ,no problem listening to favourites incl R4 when last in Spain

Mrs mikebeaches listening to The Archers every evening on her cheaply Android phone, here in Spain - no additional software or programming required. ;) (y)

You can watch tv without vpn as well if you are using a uk registered data sim.

I think it depends a lot on what you listen to. Most of the time we have no problems but certain BBC programmes cut out, for 'rights' reasons. Most stuff they produce themselves is OK though sport can be problematic as they buy the rights to broadcast only for the UK. For our TV we use My Private Network which seems OK even with BBC TV and is not too expensive for UK cover. On our Amazon echos we have no VPN and suffer very little loss of service

Tunein radio uses less data than BBC iPlayer radio, so we always use that - without a vpn.

I saw an advert for NordVPN on tv the other day?! Sign of the times I guess...

Another vote here for Nord, been with them a couple of years now.

No vpn needed. +1 For Tunein radio, select the 48 kps feed and play it through the van radio via Bluetooth. Uses so little data it's not worth worrying over.

I thought I would install the iOS version of TuneIn to test it before our upcoming trip to Spain but was put off by loads of reviews concerning the number and type of ads the app serves up on the screen of your device, especially in the most recent version. Some ads apparently freeze the radio sound until acknowledged, while others are for inappropriate services, such as escorts.

Have users on here found ads a problem? Is there a paid version without ads?

I have installed another app, Radioplayer, which is strong on UK content, but that has no controls to use different bit rates.

Never had a problem with ads on tunein. We use it on my phone whilst we travel, and I also have the app on firestick so am listening to radio 2 now on site in Spain through the tv.

We are listening to UK Gold App via the tablet connected to the TV, whilst here in Spain. The tablet provides our evening TV (when there is nothing going on around us), using Slick VPN, and the UK TV Catchup App. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

BBC have an updated app called BBC Sounds.
Free to download, register, sign in and away there you go worldwide.

Thanks all.
I didn’t know you could listen to the bbc without vpn :)
There are some program exceptions on BBC Radio over the internet (now BBC Sounds app). For example, Radio 5 live with Formula 1 where the BBC does not have live rights (most but not all races), I have also had the occasional refusal on Radio 4 but cannot remember for what, however we listen to Radio 4 all over Europe even on our cell data. Can even bluetooth to van radio on the move.
