We haven’t used the tunnel before and will be on the 6.30am train going to the U.K. and arriving back in Calais 10 days later at 10.25pm.

Any recommendations for a suitable and safe overnight stop no more than an hour from Calais (we’ll be driving from the Limousin and back)?

Calais aire €10 about 4k from eurotunnel

Gravelines. I’m parked in it as I type. Plenty of room, all nice and flat.

About 25-30 minutes south of Calais, quiet but no facilities

According to a review on the link you provided, dated 31st July, 2020, it is no longer allowed to park there.

Thanks for your responses so far. I had considered Gravelines but there are lots of reports of bikes being stolen from the back of motorhomes there and I know someone personally who had there's stolen from there despite them being very well secured and locked. I would be a bit nervous about stopping there for this reason so am looking to be a little further away from the port.

Gravelines last night was 8 vans, (two English, one Dutch, one German, rest french) bar open as well as restaurants. Only one of the three bakers open this morning (Monday), cafes and soar open as norm, and the takeaway that is on the side of the square is now perm shut.

Try watten Aire very small canalside , need to be early to get a space
Or gravelines rural Aire bit remote behind sports lake no services , we,be stopped a couple of times .

Hi.
We have stayed a couple of times at the Aire just outside of Boulogne It is by a small sport stadium and if you walk across the grass, you can look down on where the old Hovercraft used to dock/beach. Great if you have a dog to walk. Last time there some years back,it was barrier/Pay to enter
Tea Bag

Equime plage is nice on a headland over looking the sea. They jump off the cliffs on them parachutes amazing to watch close up. Approx 45 mins to Calais ish

Last year we stayed at Camping des Mottes Black, Sangatte. Pleasant enough site and only a few minutes from the tunnel.

Would be interesting to understand if its an actual problem at Gravelines or the same report of bike theft coming up time and again. There were some issues a couple of years ago but havent heard anything recently.

This link is to a pic of the free aire at Sangatte- we stayed there last time we were coming back - was v busy at the time and no spaces but we parked up at the bus station just down the road with several other motorhomes. All very friendly people and no sign of the immigrant camp with that name so d/k if it ever was in that area ? Ten mins drive from/to the tunnel, port not much further . Beach lovely; village quiet only one or two eateries- no veggie food so we didnt eat out

I certainly wouldn’t have been worried last night about theft, all very quiet, same as last time. No kids, or immigrants hanging about. Felt perfectoy safe to us. Didn't bother to set the alarm or anything.

There are quite a few separate reviews on Park4Night that say their bikes were stolen and obviously the ones I know personally about, so definitely more than once. We will need our bikes for transport in the uk so don't want to take any unnecessary risks. Seems like there are a few other options being recommended so I'll have a look at them too.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. We ended up staying on the aire at Sangatte - we didn’t arrive until after 10pm but there were still quite a few spaces left. Felt very safe and no problems. We were on the 6.15am train the following morning, just 22 hours before the quarantine rules changed!

We stayed at Gravelines for the first time on monday. Wish someone had said how far it was to walk to the front. Would of got the bikes out seemed like miles.

The PMU bar is about 400 metres.

Learning point for next time !!!

Youll see a lot more Funsters in that bar than on the front

If you are looking for a convenient site the Camping l'Escale in Wacquingham is a good choice. You can exit at any time so early trains are no problem. It is in the ACSI book outside of peak times. Easy acces from the A16.
