I need to stop procrastinating and get this booked as we can’t get a space on the Newcastle Ijmuiden ferry for the 1st or 2nd August!

Am I right that the best discounts are available from the 2 camping clubs? Does anyone know which one gives the better discount? Or if there’s a better way of going about it?

Thanks for your help (y)

I did a price check recently and by far the cheapest I found was www.directferries.co.uk

But I have also heard about club deals often including camp site nights that even if disregarded come out even cheaper, I didn't find that on my search, but above link was well over 25% under going direct to P&O (north sea ferries)

We have always used Hull Zeebrugge for last 17 years with motorbike, priced up for motorhome thought it was getting expensive, so priced up Harwich to Hook of Holland in June and got it for £207 return for up to 10m Moho and £263 in sept (with a trailer on) both daytime crossings, although changed the sept one to overnight with cabin and breakfast outbound and that came to £368 return Moho and trailer. The hull crossing on same dates was £880 with NO discounts

Oh I forgot, expect delays on the A63 for the next few years, there’s major roadworks in the planning!!

Hull Rotterdam coming up as £864 or £768 from directferries as suggested by @DavidG58.
Harwich Hook coming up as £573 direct with Stena.

Harwich is an extra 160 miles / 3 hours + driving each way but £573 is s lot more palatable.

Maybe it would take me the extra 3 hours getting through the Hull roadworks!!!

I would take Martins @funflair advice and call CMC before committing, he does more research than any other person I know (y)

certainly nothing to be lost by ringing :) other than another few hours not booked

I don't know if that's a compliment or not David;)

CCC quoted me 10% less than P&O for Hull-Rotterdam, in line with their blurb.

We use this route most years and always find if you phone the CMC you'll get a better deal, I'm sure on their website its only the standard cabin and if you call them you can book the saver cabin. I'm sure they are the same its to do with cancellation.

I think for now they are preparing to put a pedestrian bridge over the A63, that’s the first small bit of the roadworks, after that if they stick to original plans they are going to drop the A63 DOWN and have the minor roads and walkway OVER the A63. It’s all to do with uniting the city as the A63 splits the city bit off from the marina, they want it so it’s all one by foot, AND keep the A63 free flowing, gonna take a few years tho!

The price difference P&O bs C&MC is partly to do the vehicle size I think, P&O have a price up to 7.99 metres and then it goes 8 metres to 11.99 so if you are 8.5 you are paying for a 12 metre space, the C&MC see to charge in smaller bands.

It's so convenient for us the Newcastle-Ijmuiden route but what a price, same with the Hull route, so sometimes drive straight to Dover, wish they were more reasonable, that's with phoning the CMC too.

And I believe that it is cheaper to book in Jan Feb and this reminds me that we have not booked for a Dusseldorf trip this year.

We did the Newcastle crossing last September and it cost £328 return through the CMC, thats a 6.4M PVC with 2 adults and inside cabin. We did book in the February though and probably worked out cheaper than driving to Dover, the October before we did Hull - Rotterdam for £340 and 2017 we did a July crossing for under £400.

I think I could save £100 or so going via Dover but for the extra few £££ its quite relaxing start to our holiday.

So, joined CMC and CCC yesterday. We wanted to try them both for a year anyway.
We had a quote from direct ferries for £741 (direct with P&O was well over £800) for MH and 3 passengers in first half of August.
CMC then quoted £745 which was reduced to £691 if we took 4 free campsite vouchers.
So, the way I see it, even if we don’t use the vouchers, using them to book the ferry gave us a year’s free membership.
Thanks all for advice.

Make sure if booking through them that they quote and book for the length you are including bike rack, not the length their database has for your model of van. we got caught out a few years ago, even had the motorhome and bike length in my data on the site. We had to pay a rurcharge for the extra .283M which cost a lot more than we had saved.
Going this route this year, most discount I could get was 27p didn't bother and booking direct with P&O at that time was cheaper than direct ferries, which I do also use.

We never quote the bike rack and so far never been questioned on it, if they did I would just stick the bikes inside for the sailing.

@scotzsue How do they catch you? Do they actually measure MOHO as it goes onto ferry as that's less than 12 inches difference?

We've seen them measure the motorhomes before boarding the ferry for Spain from Portsmouth.

Yes they come out and measure each vehicle, with one of those measuring wheels. we had to pay standard price for the crossing for that day, think it was an extra £45.00 we have another van now so was over 4 years ago. Was well annoyed as we ended up parked with a cars nose under the rack but perhaps they needed to do that to get us on. Always check the vehicle detals now.
Saw an irate spaniard being excorted off docks at Santander as he refused to pay for the lengh of his vehicle.

The thing is if you are 8 metres or over P&O charge you for up to 12 metres anyway so no point nor declaring the full length, if you are just under 8 metres though a bike rack could prove expensive.

The funny think is C&MC charge by a different systrm for the same ferry.
