When we travel round Mrs B and I link to listen to our local BBC radio station, Radio Stoke. When we go to foreign climes we take Alex and play it via the Internet. Last February when we're in Spain we ask3d Alexa to play Radio Stoke which played a pre recorded message about sport and contractual rights. After a few days of trying we worked out it was due to the Winter Olympics and Eurosport having the broadcasting rights. Why it involved local Radio stations being taken offline we never found out. Winter Olympics finished back came Radio Stoke.

Last even8ng we were having our tea listening to the radio, when at 18:50 local the recorded messages started again. We are in France. This was 1 hour before the Commonwealth Games open8ng ceremony started. Why the BBC has done it this time I do not onow as they have the broadcast rites.

Anybody else in foreign areas had the same problem?

Ps. Not just Radio Stoke.

It's not really worth it for a few weeks every few years. I know the guys at Stoke were really hacked off about it. They had not been told.

A VPN may see you o'right duck.

but do some research before signing up to ought.

As an aside wheres your best oakcake shop?

Good one in Leek.

Last time we were in Hanley & Newcastle (2019) was shocked by the lack of care, closed shops and folks hanging about on street corners. NOT as enjoyed 60 years ago.

The best oatcake shop is High Lane Oatcakes, Tunstall.
The town centres have picked up a bit. When the Tories were voted in 2019 in areas that had been Labour since the year dot has brought a lot of money in from the Government. Kidsgrove got about 6 million.

The answer to your problem lies in the magic of VPNs... (Virtual Private Networks)

I don’t know why. But BBC sounds won’t work when I have the vpn turned on. Even when in uk

It can be a bit tricky at times.
I use two different VPNs and when the Beeb get wise to one I use the other.

If I still have problems I switch from Chrome to DuckDuckGo...

I normally win in the end!

Are you using a UK mobile SIM when you use Alexa to listen to BBC Radio Stoke?

I don't seem to need a VPN when I use a UK SIM but they may tighten up for restricted broadcast rights.

But they may not have the rights outside the UK.

I don’t know if this will work for you, but I use BBC sounds app on my smart phone and stream it via Bluetooth to the radio. Radio doesn't seem to use much data.

Up until the Commonwealth Games started on Thursday there was not a problem. The games finish on Monday the 8th and I guess it will go back to things as normal. This will have something to do with broadcasting rites. The BBC will have done deals with broadcasters for games news. The local radio stations will report on the games and what the local competitors have done. This will be broadcasting info a national broadcaster will have paid to have rites to.
They seem to have taken a broad brush to the issue as I would doubt France would be bothered about the Commonwealth Games.

You get the same problem in the UK if you try to listen to the BBC local radio through the Tuned In app - very annoying as it’s built in to my “stream in through the house” system.

The only way I can now get my favourite local station (BBC Northampton- especially Bernie Keith in the morning) is to Bluetooth to the speaker from my phone . Which is fine, except you can’t link speakers throughout the house so not so good.

It happens every time BBC have a major event on, such as olympics, World Cup, commonwealth games and is due to them and Tuned In not being able to see eye to eye on rights.

I didn’t have any restrictions in June using Alexa in France and Spain .

Morning

BBC local radio is back online. The producer explained this morning that it was a broadcasting rites issue. Example. If someone is listening to say Radio Essex and the play a clip of someone local winning a race it contravenes the rites that ABC have paid for.

More than likely happen again when the World Cup starts.
