Just a warning to would be visitors that Bath is starting it's LEZ in a few weeks and motorhomes will be a target

The scheme will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week from its launch date on 15 March.

The Council has confirmed private cars and motorbikes will not need to pay a daily fee to travel in the zone but many other higher emission vehicle owners will be affected.

Buses, coaches, Heavy Goods Vehicles and motorhomes will face a £100 per day charge to drive into the zone.

Meanwhile higher emission minibuses, taxis, private hire vehicles and vans will pay £9 a day to use roads in the city centre.

Info from

Park & Ride works well in Bath. 0 logic in the way vehicles are chosen to be charged. Any old car or motorcycle can drive in but not Euro6 Motorhomes. Not that I would want to drive a largeish Motorhome into that town.

If your motorhome is over 3500kg and therefore registered as PHG then you can apply for the discounted charge of £9 per day.

I put my van registration in the Govt vehicle checker and got the following result:

But is 'Car' the correct CAZ classification for a campervan (plated 3,500kg)?

Our van is a 2016-registered Fiat Ducato Euro 5+ And I thought diesels needed to be Euro 6 to qualify for 'No charge'??

So questions, questions...

If over 3500kg and euro5 you will pay. Its £100 unless you apply for the £9 concession. Not sure on euro6
This zone will catch you going south on a46 to a4 to a36, ie stroud to warminster without going into the city, or Bristol to warminster or bristol to chippenham using a4.
You will be ok to get to bath marina campsite but only from the west.

....or does the ‘Exemption’ mean exempted from no-charge, i.e. ‘chargeable’.....?

Not sure on euro6
Does not apply to Euro 6. I got this from the Bath & NE Somerset site.

Compliant vehicles (no charge)

Vehicles that are electric, low emission or conform to more recent Euro standardsshould emit less pollution than older vehicles, and can therefore travel without charge in Bath Clean Air Zone. The following classes of vehicles are all compliant:

  • Euro 6/VI diesel vehicles (or newer)
  • Euro 4/IV petrol vehicles (or newer)
  • Fully electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
  • All hybrid vehicles
  • Modified or retrofitted vehicles registered with the Energy Saving Trust’s Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)

My XC60 comes up as no charge for bath but £8 for Birmingham
The 5 tonne van has no charge for either.
A bit bizarre as the Volvo is supposed to be Euro 6

Seems completely bizarre!

Our 2016 diesel Jag, which is Euro 6, comes up as free for Bath and Birmingham (as I would have expected).

Perhaps the following note on the Govt website should be heeded:

Important information about vehicle data

"The data accuracy of this service is always improving. It is recommended you recheck your vehicle shortly before you intend to drive in any Clean Air Zones."

Bath is CAZ C which means that all private cars are exempt from the charge.
Bristol will be CAZ D which means all vehicles pay unless euro 6 (if diesel). It will be come a nightmare as more and more cities decide on their own rules!

Just checked ours. 2019 Peugeot 2.0l, Elddis Magnum 185, ad blue, euro 6, 3700kg so PHGV. Comes back as no charge at all for both Bath & Birmingham. (y)

Interesting, I didn't realise Bristol was going to be different from Bath! As you say, a nightmare as more places introduce CAZs.

How nice of Bath City Council to celebrate my birthday with the start of their LEZ

Is a MH a car? Well it is Vehicle category M, albeit M (Special purpose) but most V5c I have seen just have M.

Guess who won’t be going to Bath of Brum

My Apache 700 comes up as Heavy Goods Vehicle, but classed as no charge on both Bath and Birmingham.
Would be interesting to put it to the test and see what both city councils said, regarding to pay or not 🚍

We live just a mile from the City centre. Checked ours a while back and it comes back as No Charge. I thought it was wierd but the explanation appears to be it is classified as a private car.
It's a series 2 Renault Master base, 2007. 3.5 T, 3000cc. So advice is check yours, you might be OK.
Like others I'd recommend avoiding the center anyway, awful traffic controls, rubbish one-way systems and a so-called 'bus gate' that's a license to fleece visitors.

The Bath Marina Caravan Park is outside the Clean Air Zone but you would need to take care approaching it. OK from the west.

The charge categories are listed here.

My understanding is that any Euro 6 (VI) vehicle is ok. Motorhomes below 3500kg are I believe classified as M1 which means they should be ok. However motorhomes registered as PHGV i.e. over 3500kg which are Euro 5 (V) or earlier seem to fall into the big bad £100 category. It is a bit strange that some camper vans fall into the £9 category, I am guessing they may be ones registered as N1. The only safe thing to do is use the vehicle checker here.

My 2018 Euro 6 Hymer at 3,800 KG is a 'car' and therefore free
But as the website advises, I'll bet there will be some changes over the next few months when they start see some big "cars" trundle through the city.
I'd be inclined to check each time before you go there.

If it is registered at over 3500kg they usually class them as PHGV not Car. Interesting.

Just checked my 21 year old Elddis Peugeot Boxer 2.5 TD, which as been known to smoke a little. It is subject to the £9 daily charge.
When i went to Bath previously i stayed on a THS at Limpley Stoke and cycled in along the canal and i would probably do the same again, or even stay at Bradford upon Avon.
Just a matter of avoiding an unneccessary journey through the zone, which i presume is the point.

Mike

Kybod you will need to plan your journey carefully if you go to Limpley Stoke as the direct route would be from the A4 or A46 to the A36 this would take you in and out of the zone. You would need to go via Bradford on Avon if coming from the north or east . If you were going from the Bristol Direction you would need to turn off before Bath at Newton St Loe and go via Odd Down , Midford and Hinton Charterhouse to avoid the zone.
