I'm a newbie
Bailey 79-4 i ground clearance problem, we collected our 18 plate bailey tonight and we were really excited until i reversed it onto our drive and ripped off a steel strap and insulation to what seems to be the battery storage box. Has anyone else had clearance problems with this model? I now have to get this on a ramp for repairs. our drive has a slight rise but nothing extreme, gutted with this .

Fitting air assist suspension to the rear should cure it. 79-4 has a long overhang at the rear.

Batteries are at the front just behind the rear wheels in the centre. Pm me a photo and I can have a look and see what it is.
I would imagine it’s something from the back, probably the spare wheel carrier

Have you been on the Gin again tonight Simon

If its insulation is it from the Fresh water tank?
Haha!!
I reckon it’s the water tank. Metal straps and insulation. The battery box isn’t insulated!

It is the battery box, seems to have insulation around it, i am going to fit 16 inch wheels to give me another inch of ground clearance.

Air assist would not be far from the price of new wheels and tyres. More useful in my opinion because if you change the tyres to 225s on the rear on the existing rims you could upgrade to 4100kgs

Can you fit air assist to that chassis (asking for a friend ...) without it being in the realms of a third mortgage ...

Yes Gliderite will supply a kit that will also lift the rear of the van. VB Comfort Air is a true air assist in that it does not raise the rear by much but will increase the ride comfort and carrying capacity.

I'm interested in this post as I had a similar situation when I tried to pull onto the space where I keep my 794t and instead of using the proper slope up to the drive I tried to save all the manoeuvring and lift out the two removeable fences which I made for getting the caravan out easier. As I started pulling in I heard a scrape, stopped and although I couldn't see anything I decided that perhaps in hind sight I'd use the slope. I'm still not sure where the grounding was but as has been said it's arse is quite a way from the rear wheels. Interested to know about the air ride V larger tyres choice

I have the rear air assist like i said it helps but the front end is so low and i think the only option would be full air .

So i fitted 16 inch wheels from elite wheels and tyres in redding with bf goodrich all terrain tyres, what a difference, its raised it 2 inches and clears everything now. only issue is the tpms light is now on and cannot be reset unless by a dealer. May not bother having it reset. Clearance now though is great and i love the wheels and tyres.

I do not understand how you gained 2" of ground clearance.

Changing wheel diameter from 15" to 16" would give you 1/2" assuming you retained the same 70 profile tyre.

Andyfozz , any chance of seeing a photo of your wheels/van , thinking of the same move...

ok so further to my experience with the bailey, the new wheels and tyres have raised the vehicle substantially. I have no clearance problems now and am inclined to believe that the battery box strap was damaged prior to it grounding on my drive. One thing i have learned is that the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System will not work unless new sensors are fitted to the wheels, available online for £28.00 each. Tyres have to come off to fit them.
I am not going to bother. Went over some low ridges and steep bridges the weekend and all was fine. Much happier now with the clearance.

Did your tpms light reset itself?
