Awning or not?

All of my past vans have come with awnings already fitted, however since we bought the Quest screen house (pop up) we now use that almost all the time. I think if i was to buy another van and it didnt have an awning then i would not bother.

A roll out awning, yes, and a Quest pop up.

But I'd not get one of those caravan style awnings with walls or a safari room.
There is a reason you see lots of them for sale "....used once...."

We use the roll out awning quite often in hot place/ on hot days, it makes the van a lot cooler and gives us a reasonable area to sit under.

The Quest is mostly used to store bikes, boats, tables and chairs and dry washing, all out of sight!
We normally only put it up if we are in one location for several days.

Wouldn’t be without our roll out awning. It keeps direct sun off the fridge side of the van & gives us somewhere nice to sit in the shade. Sometimes put one or more of the windblocker sides up if more protection needed.

Its a no from me. We have a length of awning rail instead and just attach an inflatable sunshade to that. Takes about 5 mins to put up/take down and because its inflatable you can leave it out in wind and rain without worrying about it getting damaged or damaging your MH.

We use our Quest more than the awning, at least you don't have to worry about when your not around.

That sounds another good way forward👍.

The only problem with a separate awning that isn’t attached to the van is that some campsites then charge for it.

Absolutely. What’s the point of having mobility if you set up like a Wobblebox owner, the benefit of being a Motorhomer surely is the simplicity of it.
And they take up mega space along with being extremely heavy.

As said, used for shading the MH side, sitting in the shade, and cooking outside when it's raining. But also we have fixings for the awning legs on the side of the MH. So the awning can be rolled out a couple of feet, to give a useful space to hang wet jackets when you arrive back soaked. And the door can be left open if it's raining but warm, without the rain getting in the door.

Interesting replies, some refering to the wind out sunshade as an awning.

My idea of an awning is one of those things that you build and attach to you vehicle..

The same word is used for both, which obviously causes some confusion. Caravanners usually mean the build/attach type, motorhomers usually mean the wind-out type. But both can be used for either vehicle type.

awning
/ˈɔːnɪŋ/
noun

  1. a sheet of canvas or other material stretched on a frame and used to keep the sun or rain off a shop window, doorway, or ship's deck.

Here is a photo of my "sunshade" in full use

How big is it when folded?

Although we have a Thule wind out awning we always use our Dometic air awning. Excellent for storing outside equipment and we lock our ebikes up in it at night. Only takes us 25 mins to erect.

It's a motorhome site. Probably just semantics as both Thule and Fiamma call these awnings, as do most other people.

25 minutes would kill it for us. We may as well caravan, but everyone has different needs.

Surely that's an awning in your profile picture
Yes it is ,it was included with the van ,if I had a choice I would not have bought it as an extra.we only seem to use it to keep the sun off the fridge vent.We have had far more use out of the popup and even bought a canopy for that
We can leave the popup out in the wind but not the awning.

Didn’t take up the option when I bought it so saved weight. I use a parasol and a water filled plastic base .
