There are awnings that have straps that go over the van.

Fit an awning rail?

Use a stand-alone like the Pop up type?

Not keen on the strap option tried it once windy outside and straps kept banging on the roof.

Thanks for your input 👍

This clip shows using throw overs with a camper van, but the same technique works with motorhomes you just have to throw the ball a bit higher/harder.

Edit: to stop straps slapping the roof, put a couple of twists in them, it disturbs the airflow and will help stop them banging about.

We use and prefer our Ventura Freestander drive-away awning that has the provision to fix to the vehicles awning track or not, as the case may be. Best of both worlds really, the awning is very substantial, made of heavier duty materials, lightweight poles and requires guy ropes and pegging down, especially if you drive away. We had the Ventura Simplex air awning when it first came out a few years ago, but not suitable for use with a sliding door PVC we found. Putting up the freestander is a bit of a pain, not ideal for short stays but we only use for longer stays usually.
