For the last many years, my wife's Toyota IQ has been insured by rolling over from last year and we have always been out of the country and let it slide. This year they asked for over £430.... Money Supermarket got same cover for £119! Churchill changed to Sainsburys

My car was with QuoteMeHappy: auto renewal was £122 with zero excess.
I looked for better deals but accepted that theirs was the best. (y)

It expired on a Sunday so I went on the website on Monday to confirm my renewal: "your quote has expired - get a new quote."
£166 with £250 excess!

So be careful :(

... and don't forget to phone AND return any documents AND send an email telling old company you are not renewing. I had terrible trouble as they took my premium from bank despite me phoning to say I wasn't renewing.

Hassle getting the money back off them.

I've banged on before about this but whenever you buy a new insurance policy, be it home, van or car don't under any circumstances agree to auto renewal. Read your policy as insurers often slip it in unnoticed, that way they can charge you whatever premium they like without you knowing if you just let it roll over. What alerted me to this underhand tactic a few years ago was checking on my elderly mother in laws house insurance (2 bed semi, no claims, basic cover) for which Direct Line had increased the premium by £150 each year without her noticing going from £250 to £850 in 4 years. When I complained they just told me to get knotted, cancel the policy if I wanted and buy elsewhere on line. £250 premium was quoted by Direct Line themselves for "new business"!!!!!!

You should always just cancel the direct debit Joy. Better for you to pay them or reinstate dd. than for them to have your money & the aggro getting it back.

Some insurances are now asking you to tick the box if you "do not" want your insurance to automatically renew.
Learnt my lesson years ago. Now always check options at least a month before expiry. Wait for their renewal quote, if acceptable i will renew, if not i am prepared with a renewal quote to go elsewhere. Quite often it's the same company but a lot less as they assume a new customer.

Yes he explained it as if your looking a month early they need to impress you, if your looking the day before your insurance runs out your desperate and premiums go up.

Alan you shock me, have always checked prices when insuring didn't make quite as good a saving as you, but the insurance for my little doblo motorhome was less than half what a roll over would have been. Had told them I didn't want roll over, got
A email telling me how much it would be
B "
C new documents through the post
D new document by email
Quickly checked bank but no payment had been made so called them said I hoped they were better at sorting out claims.

P.S. before anyone asks it is regisered as a motorhome
