We are driving our Motorhome to Austria ( via Germany ) for a holiday in December.
Just found out we need a gobox rather than a vignette as we are over 3.5 tonnes.

Our drive across the border from Germany to our campsite Nenzing is only 34 miles. So we will only travel a total of 70 miles in Austria during the one week we are there.

Haven’t been able to find out the cost of “buying “ one of these go boxes and whether we can get one in advance of our trip or if we have to get one on the road.
Would try and avoid A roads in Austria , but there is always the risk of being diverted on to one if it’s snowy etc , and that’s a huge fine if we don’t have a go box.
So I’m going to get one but not sure how.

I’ve emailed the company but still await a reply , so was hoping for some recent experience and advice from someone in this group.
Many thanks
Russ

Hi Russ. Here is a current thread which may assist you. We had no problems on our transit to Croatia but it was damned expensive!

Go to a motorway service station in Germany prior to the border. It will be signposted ASFINAG.
Take your paperwork including proof of euro status (or you will be charged as per euro 1)
Give at least €100 min to the nice german.
read the instructions AND KEEP THE PAPERWORK
Press the on button and the 2 wheel button

ta da! All sorted
One ping good
Two ping bad - go to next asfinag station to add payment.

Sell box back on exiting and get remaining credit back (or keep for next year which is what I do)

So is the box €100 and you then need to add credit ?

I think the minimum credit is €100, you'd get a % of that back if not used all
Thanks for your help.
Ia there not a way to set an account up online , like the Liber t in France ?
My journey into Austria is 34 miles in , and than in 7 days it’s 35 miles back.
at €100 minimum payment that is going to be crazy and feels like even more of a rip off than the French tolls !

I believe that we did some registering online before we went. we may have emailed a copy of our V5. Three years ago now so memory is a bit vague. What isn’t so vague is just how difficult it was to return the box. We didn’t find anywhere in Germany coming from Austria and had to go back towards Austria on the autobahn to find somewhere to return it. We were transiting to Slovenia and it cost us £120 in total.

Russ M you need to look at all the replies your comments attracted on the above thread. I did explain how you would get one etc
Thanks. I think I’ve read all the posts , and I’m grateful to everyone , but I still can’t find one that clarifies how I can apply online rather than leave it till a garage in Germany near the border.
I’ll wait to see if the company reply to my messages aswell.
Thanks to everyone for your replies.

Russ M As said before you may not need one, especially for only 34 miles I’d be very surprised if there was not a local road to your destination. If you have a planned entry point for crossing from Germany you can take a look. The 190 rings a bell?

Im not certain you can get one online in time but you can do half of the work in advance online as outlined if not, then pickup the box at any of the GoBox distribution points, which can also be found on their web site.

The credit you must put on the box is fixed but the unused portion is, or was, fully refundable. Only the payment for the box itself is retained. I haven’t looked but I’m sure when I got mine it was all very clear on their web site and I downloaded their App & made it even easier to find ‘points of sale‘ and manage my toll account ‘Unterwegs & Asfinag’ is the App 😊

If you contact the campsite they will definitely be able to tell you if you can get there off motorway so it is not needed

Russ M Ive just seen one of your comments on another thread saying you were travelling from Bodensee, if so then I’ve just checked on Google maps and it takes 49 minutes toll free to your destination so this seems to solve your dilemma.
Thanks very much for that. I’ve looked also, and there seems to be two ways to go , a toll free and a toll. Im thinking there is always the chance of getting diverted on to the toll road for some reason ~ as has happened to others on the forum.
Many thanks for your help. Russ

To reopen an old thread:

We are looking at transiting Austria in a couple of months.
We drove there (in a car) pre pandemic, and simply bought a vignette on the border.

Our UK plated Mercedes Hymer is actually plated at 4.2t, but the German version of our van is sold plated at 3.5t.
Can the Austrians tell the difference ?
Do they cross check the number plates ?

Can you afford to pay the fine if they do find out?
It seems that the Austrian system is the most stringent and hardest to deal with after you have been sent your fine, so is it worth the risk to you?
I’ve not bought the vignette on the border as my van is over 3500kg but buying the Go Box, you have to show your log book along with other documents to rent the gadget.
I do t think they can tell from your UK Reg but it’s if you get stopped exiting the motorway or at a toll that they’ll check.

The trouble is that even getting a go box is not a sure way to avoid a fine. There are numerous stories of people being caught out, first hand info our friends were fined months after their visit because they didn't know they had to prove the Euro classe.

The best way is to work out a route that doesnt go on the motorways. It takes a bit more planning, but we ve done it several times and at 4200 you re going to be really unlucky to fall foul of a 3.5T limit if you stick to main roads. I think the ones that get into trouble are the ones that blindly follow satnav and end up on a mountain pass or a town centre its pretty obvious on a map which roads are high alpine passes.

Just to add another kefufflebite I gather the boxes only last 2 years unused. What with Covid preventing last year I got in with 8 days grace. Box now suitably recharged with € and happily pinging away along the A6

Yes that’s right, your credit on the box lasts for 2 years from entry, if you don’t add anymore the box becomes defunct. You don’t loose that credit though & if you put new credit on the box your expired credit can be added, but as in my case it meant I had over 200€ credit on it as the minimum payment as 125€ I seem to recall. I have done that.

When you return the box any credit comes back to you via the payment method and a card payment takes ages, I know.

I won’t need it any more but if so I would buy it differently in future. Pay cash at the petrol station, having registered my vehicle etc with Go Maut and emailed the docs required first so it’s on their system correctly. I did this before & it’s simple enough & you have an account then to check your balance.

Then on the way out return the box within its 2 years of credit expiry and get cash back. Get a new box next time having resurrected tge account if it’s lapsed.
