At what temp do you drain down ?

so as the title suggests when , if the van is still in use during the winter do you drain the system down or if it’s a night or two of just below freezing do you stick a heater on ?

I always drain the cold water and grey water, but usually leave the water sat in the hot water tank inside the van. If it gets too cold the safety valve should open and dump it. So have a little blue tooth temperature sensor next to it so I can check data. If it’s registered 3degC or lower it’s likely I’ll need to reset the valve before refilling.

I simply make a judgment based on the forecast for frost and when I expect to go out again. I'd apply more caution if the motorhome was in an exposed location or if left where dumped water might spoil the area. Leave the pump off, whatever you do!

Mine will just dump the heater water itself if the temperature drops that low.

Just going out to fully drain down now (nearly midnight) as its dropped to 3.5C inside the van, dont want any more buggered up shower or tap mixer cartridges.
Sure has dropped quickly out there, as it was 8/9C last night.

I drained the boiler and opened all the taps when overnight temperatures reached zero but have left 1/2 water in the fresh tank on the basis that if this freezes it has room to expand without causing damage., also I want to check the systems when I have time.

I did my first drain down yesterday(Sunday) as it was forcast low temps over a long period in the next few weeks before i go away for xmas. We had -1 this morning

I ran all the water through the taps yesterday until they started pumping air. I then emptied the grey and left the valve open. I then opened the frost valve manually to dump the heater water. I haven't bothered opening the valve on the bottom of the fresh tank as I think that involves trying to get the lid of the tank open? Maybe I should bother with that too.

I did this because my parking space drains straight into a shared courtyard where it forms a temporary puddle. Better to do it now than let it dump itself when it actually drops below freezing and makes a little ice rink...

I drain down at anytime the MH is not being used, not just in winter, then refill with fresh when required.

In addition for winter, I remove the water filter, then the showerhead, and blow out any excess water in the pipework. I then leave the taps and drain valves open, with the pump in the off position.

I’ve reached a compromise as it’s cold tonight . Boiler drained , fresh water left in half full , all taps open and small oil heater on low for tonight anyway
