Hi, all not sure if this has been posted before, but here goes....
I usually fill up with diesel from local Asda non-manned pumps, card only payment.
After checking bank statement they are charging £1 PER TRANSACTION to use the pumps!!!!
Aparrently government and banks have got together to pass a law to make this robbery LEGAL!!!
From now on I will only fill up and pay cash for my fuel.
Bloody rediculous especially as charges for credit & debit cards has recently been abolished.
Only applies to fuel purchases by card.
:mad::mad:Cheers, Dave

I noticed that Asda took a pound but it seems to be to check the card is live. That transaction has disappeared and the correct amount has been charged, I just checked. ?

Maybe this helps.....ASDA CHARGE

I had the same at Tesco yesterday. The full amount has been debited from my account but the £1 is still showing as 'pending' on my account. It will disappear in the next few days.

While we are on the subject of paying for fuel. this has happened on a number of occasions. Paying in the kiosk , before you get enter pin you have to answer yes or no for a donation of 25p for charity. Try it without your glasses and you end up giving a donation. It happened today in a Morrisons outlet. I'm a charitable chap but I like to decide who gets my charity.

Screwfix ask for a donation to round up to the next pound when buying on line. If the donation is under 50p I agree but I don't know where the money goes. I should check.

Should have gone to Shell and put some decent fuel in then :p :D
Pull up, open app, choose pump, get out, fill up, get in, drive off.. DONE

Yes had that before, as you say it just says charity and no indication where it is going. Not for me thanks

It wasn't by choice, driving back from Golders Green yesterday during the rush hour wanted to hop onto the MI at Brent Cross but alas my fuel was low low, traffic was diabolical and no sign of a garage anywhere. Cooperate decision made, stay on the A41/A1 absolute nightmare. Only fuel for miles was this Morrison place. Having said that I normally use Asda for my fuel, I cant afford your Shell prices...:)

Super U fuel stations in France take an additional 100 Euro transaction on top of you amount for fuel at the time of the card transaction and then credit it back a day or two later.
Got a bit of a shock the first time and were convinced that our card had been cloned at the pump, but after a phone call to Halifax they said it would be credited back and it was.

I don't think I have ever checked a fuel receipt but I think I will start looking.

I keep getting a £1 transaction appearing on the pending but companies do it to check the card, the money never goes out and the transaction disappears in a few days, they don’t take the money!

Depends on the type of card you use!

If you book into a hotel they often take a £300-£500 charge for any incidentals and also to make sure the card is live, it is only a lien on the account and not posted like most petrol stations esp unmanned pumps to make sure they get paid. I think you owe Mr ASDA an apology!!

I filled up several times in France in the last few days and each time there was a charge for around 100l as well as the actual charge. The extra charge disappears after a couple of days. Could be a problem uf its appearance coincided with them preoaring a statement but I think these are about 6 weeks behind. Would be a problem if using a card near its limit but I suppose that's what they are trying to trap.
Filled up yesterday in Spain, no such charge, but it wasn't self service.

I HATE that.. Even when they ask I used to begrudgingly say yes as I felt guilty... But I probably gave/worked far more than most for my own CHOSEN charities than most. Now I say NO without any guilt.

Many Pubs and restaurants do like wise, if you ask to open a "tab" for meals drinks etc: They put the card details in and a Pin. Stops people doing a runner.

This is standard practice on all card transactions. However usually the preauth is always converted to a completed transaction as the shop knows how much you are buying.
You cannot complete a transaction for a different amount to what is pre authed.

So in the case of a petrol station, they do a pre-auth to log your card and make sure it is valid. Then they do another pre-auth and complete this for the actual amount.

The pre-auth will expire automatically.

In some countries they pre-auth £100, then take the amount so you can lose access to double the amount.. At least ASDA just do the £1 to ensure the card is valid and allows them to run a fraud check on it.

Just did a quick search to find details on this.

I know this, because I used to run a merchant account and wrote the software to access the merchants API. It is a bit of a complicated/convoluted system.

2 store sited petrol stations in Spain near where we camped asked for you to submit the amount of money you were about to spend which the pump presumably checked then asked you to enter yout details. Not sure what would happen if you went for 60 Euros and went over the limit. Pedantic and confusing for tourists but presumably better for the store and bank.

Filled up at an unmanned pfs just outside Le Man's yesterday, wouldn't accept Revolut so used the Caxton card.

Just checked the account, the balance available is showing correct less the deduction for the €54 of fuel I put in, no ring fenced amount.

Will top off today before entering the motorway, probably at an unmanned supermarket for the cheapest fuel, circa €1.38, showing up to €1.68 on m/way Aires, and check the account again tonight.

You will find that the pump stops at the amount authorized. :)

I suspect it's intended to be for the benefit of the purchaser, can't see how it would be of significance to the store or bank.

For the reason above? I assume they check you have the funds before they give you any fuel. Why would they want to stop you putting in more than you thought you initially required.

It's getting much harder to find manned booths in France now. We always prefer cash but we're sometimes forced to use a card.

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of wrong information is on the internet
Nothing wrong or Illegal at ASDA
In fact the only time ASDA took a pound from me was when I used a new card and of course it never actually came out of my account in the end
