We’re a couple of newbies 😊
Hi all

Quick question for any of you north of the border at this time

We're planning to head off after the bank holiday weekend eventually hitting Inverness to visit friend and then slowly working our way across the to the West coast and then south

Just wondering what the midges are like at the moment

I'm generally fairly relaxed but the other half has a very low threshold to any flying insect thingys that bite

Am wondering if its safe to take him north yet or whether to delay a couple of weeks otherwise the trip might end up looking like this until the coast is clear :giggle:.....

Bear in mind this is produced by a midge repellant manufacturer...
Mid last September we did NC500 on push bikes and there weren't many around but you take your chances.

Been a bit too warm for them in The Central Belt until very late evening and even then not too bad. Believe further north \ west they are bad at the moment.

Avon skin so soft ( Jungle formula ) as above this spray does work and you’ll smell nice to.
If you stay on the east coast you’ll be fine.
Moray coast, and Fife are also beautiful and almost midge free. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Totally agree,it’s the most beautiful country, the west coast can be challenging for midges,,but I would still give it a go,,,,,or go out of season,,it’s still my favourite place on Gods Earth👍👍

We’re going middle of next week. Been going to Scotland every year for 14 years now...nothing really works against them, although some are slightly better at holding them off for a while than others. When I get bitten I just get a bit of an itch, and by morning I a have freckle like Mark and that’s it. The Mrs on the other hand suffers terribly and comes up in wealts and they itch like crazy. The Avon stuff did not work at all for us. Make sure you have a fan in your van, they don’t like wind, oh, and shut all vents too.👍

Rule #1- always keep an aerosol spray of midge killer in the ’van, despite all of your precautions there will always be 1 locked in there with you at night (in midge-world it’s sort of like being locked in a burger bar)
Rule#2- always have a sacrificial human in there with you (one the midges just love), you will be fine!!

Rule 3 - always have a fully charged "Executioner" style fly swatter. The midges may be in and around and driving you nuts BUT the satisfaction of seeing and hearing them explode is a joy (and besides, you get to practice your tennis shots).

Small hand held hoover makes short work of them along the window ledges of the van.
